Exactly, and NOW is that time.
This is why I push them to do more and do better. Never settle.
It is not my intention to "dismiss" anyone's ideas or desires. That said, I'm going to assume it's okay I have my own opinions on the talked-about matters, too. Wheeled vehicles would be super neato. We'd have another vehicle option. Cool. It's even closer to real life stuff we have, so, more relatable. Cool.
My counter argument against wheeled vehicle development has been exemplified in this very thread, though. Let me offer some examples.
Here are (other) features I found requested in this thread alone:
Moving around on a moving ship! (Really high on the list for me, too!)
Round Planets, Poles Gone, Bigger Planets, New planet textures
Underwater Oceanscapes, Underwater vehicles/movement
Underwater base building (with real water, though, not just below the water plane)
More devices and materials/ores, More blocks to build with
Better/more advanced building tools
Better character model textures
Treads (they're not the same thing as wheels) *
Docking rings (though you can kinda build this yourself...) * (And really, just make SVs able to warp)
Manned turrets (to control the turret without a camera) (I don't get this one) *
Two types of space suits, civilian/military *
SV/HV going under water (SVs used to be able to do this)
Robust mod support
Spend more of their energy on the core of the game
New projectile weapons (flamethrower) *
More Space/Multiple Solar Systems
Better AI, Better Animations, Better Combat
NPC factions, New Alien Races
HV <--> SV docking
New class of ship (some type of dropship) *
Ban CVs from atmosphere (I'd be down with this only if SVs could warp--why can't they?) *
Now--these are just items I found in this single thread. Imagine what the devs feel/think when they read this. I'm a software developer. Sometimes, I finish a big project, or large code customization, send it out to a client asking for functional onsite verification of "live" functionality. Instead of giving me that information back, they give me a list of other items/bugs/things for me to do--ignoring what I've already done, and much of the time, ignoring what they've already told me was their priority. That's frustrating and disheartening.
My entire reason for offering a counter-plead against wheeled vehicles is that in software development, everything, even seemingly tiny things, take time/money/resources. Mostly, it takes double the time and double the cost originally predicted. I dunno why that is, but that's my experience in global enterprise development on a commercial level. If Eleon is spending time on WV, the physics of WV, the bugs that come with WV, etc., it takes up time and resources they don't spend on any number of other things. Now, pulling from that list above, I'd take every feature on there over wheeled vehicles as a more immediate desire, save for the ones I starred.
We can and should talk about desired features, yes. We should, however, take into account what we are asking, and offer a desired prioritization for those asks. From our survey in 2016, out of 19 Major Features, WV ranked #15 on the list.
I harp on these things from a developer's perspective because, as a community, staying consistent with the priorities of our asks will allow Eleon to be very clear on what we'd like to see in the game in what order. They've been really good listeners from my experience. My goal, like others, is to offer my opinion of upcoming features. Unlike some others, though, I have a kinda "insider" perspective, if you will, which drives my desires to ensure we steer Eleon in the direction that we, as a community, already told Eleon we want to go.
I agree. Assuming that they have a fixed budget of "physics work" they can do in the next few months/year, which one do we want first?
moving inside a moving spaceship
For me: Moving inside a moving spaceship > round planets > flowing water > underwater vehicles > wheels
my wishes would be
2) (for me it's fixing a bug!)
than 5) (we know it's coming)
than 3) (round planets mean bigger planets (Hummel-o-War) mean bigger lakes...)
I would like wheels, but as multiple said already, it's too costly (in dev time) for improved game play aspects
I think the most glaringly obvious oversight on behalf of the devs is that we only have ONE variety of Pizza. Breaks immersion for me. I think a variety of Pizza bases and toppings are a must if this game is to have any future. I'd suggest adding specialised Stone (Concrete) Pizza ovens for real authenticity.
YEP... and then more colors, a bigger pallet, a lot more textures and a ton more block shapes. We still don't even have a small 'B' corner to finish a ramp corner properly.
And we need, really NEED some stuffed crusts available as well.
I was trying to keep the list to only physics based items. There are other items like NPCs, offline protection, etc. that I would have in the list otherwise.
I'm assuming that other dev resources can be working on non-physics code in parallel.
Why say we would not have races or species?
If in the future we do not choose the planets to start already the race.
For underwater worlds of species that do not need oxygen underwater.
For cold planets, the race is cold-resistant, a hot race that does not bother the planet's heat. Race resistant to poison. Every race is resistant to something and weak to other things. A good mix can be made there.
I imagine a system in which you have one aquatic planet and one desert, different ores, two species. The water is weak on the heat and the desert consumes a lot of oxygen in the water. Two enemy races need the same ore for building base and spaceships. Half the required ore on one planet and half on the other. Epic ...
Beating my favorite drum, the ability to move containers of stuff from CV to base, from SV to CV, etc. ! I'd like to build a container terminal with a crane or tractor beam or something. Here is a cargo SV I made, would be nice to not have to move EVERY SINGLE ITEM thorough my backpack. This ship fits in a special hangar door on my CV near the constructors.
On the man turrets I should of explain better were a player can sit in a chair like a ball turret in a B-17 top, or rear gunner position and fire weapons while the pilot flies a SV or HV. I know some would like to make armor turrets on HV's to give it a tank look but this is just a something I thought of I know the Devs are doing a good job I have no complains wait except we cant walk in CV's while they fly. I do enjoy reading others thoughts I think a lot of players already thought of these before I have.
I have seen in the workshop were a player made fake cranes on a Base or CV I forgot which but did thought that would be nice to have working cranes or some type of tool to move whole containers for CV to Base and other areas nice idea you have.
I saw this ship and in my head Big Ten Inch by Aerosmith started playing.... the fact that it has a special docking bay isn't helping the imagery. >.<
So I can be Uncivil on the Uncivil forum? hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm interestinggggggggggggggg
There we just throw caution into the wind and speak our minds freely without a filter
All 2 of us that have posted on there haha
I guess it will last as long as someone doesn't complain that it is unethical and is locked
To me wheeled vehicles is actually low on my wishlist...I mean, its the future! we have (or should have ) space age thurster and warp drive technology...who wants to carry around a puncture kit when you can just zoom over those narly rocks in the first place - rework the HV and make it more unique
I think of Wheeled Vehicles in the future being a 'for fun' kinda thing... along similar lines as 'Raptor Mounts'... something to joyride in, maybe Race, maybe just screw around with while waiting for completion of a long line of Constructor Processes... just plain recreational use. Thus i'd like them, but they're low priority. I don't even need Wheels during Alpha, I can wait on them till Beta. Raptor Mounts might not ever get to be a thing unless a Modder saves the day.
