I do not want to spread any fear nor cause alarm and I am also no the biggest fan of Ted Talks, but, as my area is starting to quarantine I thought I might be helpful and post this:

It is not terrible. Plus youtube has a constant link to the USA CDC up(it should dynamically show up in the bottom left hand corner when you access the site via PC.)

    Good article: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-020-0820-9

It is a good read but two aspects are important. The first:

    "
    Theories of SARS-CoV-2 origins
It is improbable that SARS-CoV-2 emerged through laboratory manipulation of a related SARS-CoV-like coronavirus. As noted above, the RBD of SARS-CoV-2 is optimized for binding to human ACE2 with an efficient solution different from those previously predicted7,11. Furthermore, if genetic manipulation had been performed, one of the several reverse-genetic systems available for betacoronaviruses would probably have been used19. However, the genetic data irrefutably show that SARS-CoV-2 is not derived from any previously used virus backbone20. Instead, we propose two scenarios that can plausibly explain the origin of SARS-CoV-2: (i) natural selection in an animal host before zoonotic transfer; and (ii) natural selection in humans following zoonotic transfer. We also discuss whether selection during passage could have given rise to SARS-CoV-2." <- as noted by @geostar1024

    and the second:

    "
    Conclusions
In the midst of the global COVID-19 public-health emergency, it is reasonable to wonder why the origins of the pandemic matter. Detailed understanding of how an animal virus jumped species boundaries to infect humans so productively will help in the prevention of future zoonotic events. For example, if SARS-CoV-2 pre-adapted in another animal species, then there is the risk of future re-emergence events. In contrast, if the adaptive process occurred in humans, then even if repeated zoonotic transfers occur, they are unlikely to take off without the same series of mutations. In addition, identifying the closest viral relatives of SARS-CoV-2 circulating in animals will greatly assist studies of viral function."

With respect to Masks, please send them to the nearest Health unit that needs them unless you are a organ recipient or have a direct need. The masks I am referring to are the N95 and above type.

After reading a touch further, I will add this article: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2...-mask-stop-coronavirus-covid-19-facts-checked to the OP. Because masks can be helpful in certain situations. The article speaks of the masks blocking droplets but are not as useful in walking around town or blocking the virus itself. This is a tricky differentiation because some areas, like say, the very densely packed Chinese cities with many people in close proximity, would likely see some usefulness from the masks, but other nations like Canada, USA, or Canada with some less dense and others highly dense might not need them as much.

More specifically, it's the N95 type mask you want - which are getting harder and harder to come by these days.
Your standard paper-fiber or nylon fiber masks don't have the filtration to offer much protection against COVID-19. The N95's do offer better protection, but in most cases, wearing masks isn't so much to protect you from catching something, bur rather to prevent you from spreading something to others.

It's insane. I don't even see where anyone said people should buy toilet paper. It's like everyone decided that they better buy it because everyone else is going to buy it or something.
Luckily my local store had plenty in stock today so I could buy a small pack for myself. :D

I am very surprised by the rapid worldwide spread of this virus! I thought I would have a grace period until I get to where I am, but there have been cases and even a deceased in the capital. Even today a period of suspending classes in schools of all levels will be announced. It is truly regrettable that it was not dealt with at the right time to prevent its spread. Even people who knowing themselves with symptoms do not take shelter in quarantine and continue to go to public places!
I hope that each and every one of you and your families can be well.

Well, like many others, I have parents in their 80s, so I am worried more about their safety.
That is the official statement for my country:
    Actual (12.03., 15:30 h) in Austria Health-Ministry: 1 Dead, 361 Infected, 4 People healed.

I'm concerned for everyone and hope you all keep safe and healthy. I do a weekly shop with my husband so cupboards and large freezer are well stocked but have decided for next time that I will do shopping online. Hubby is a double amputee confined to a wheelchair and got a life threatening blood disorder and his immune system is not great so concerned for him. He of course is more concerned that I get it.. We have a saying here in Scotland. "What's for ye will no go by ye." What will be will be. Stay safe people.

The trick to understanding this and also to understand how occurrences of the virus seemed to pop up out of nowhere is to understand part of the viral process itself; virus's have an incubation period within the body. Different virus's and different strains of the same virus have different intervals. The woman in the video I linked mentioned that the incubation period for Covid-19 was around 24 days. So that means it was potentially spreading for a month before it bloomed in Wuhan China. Now that we know it is there, the rate of spread will fall dramatically over the next month or two. This can be seen in China where they were especially draconian about the quarantine - the virus's progress appears to be halted or drastically diminished.

I hope he is safe! His vulnerability will likely depend on how that blood condition effects his lungs and respiratory system. If they do, then yup, keep him cloistered, if not, take standard precautionary measures.

While Covid-19 appears to have an especially good nose for those with difficulties with their respiratory systems, there are many of more advanced age that are recovering. So as long as sensible steps are taken about care, things should be okay.

There are now 313 confirmed cases of COVID-19 across Australia. It was 250 yesterday. Five people have died.
But this could all change in a heart beat and ramp up quickly.

Sadly yes it does. Most the news crews that had interviewed them have also had to self isolate for two weeks.

    In Argentina he gets serious.
Measures have been taken to prevent further contagion. Closing of borders and deportation of recently arrived foreigners who do not want to or cannot quarantine (270 deportees are counted). The entrance to foreigners who do not reside in the country is prohibited. Those who for different reasons are out of the country and need to return are being repatriated.
Events of all kinds are suspended. No clubs, bars with limited people, meetings and parties also suspended. I suspend my daughters birthday.
We only have 54 confirmed cases and 2 deaths that returned from abroad with symptoms. There are small cities in preventive quarantine.
It is decreed that for 10 days, if possible, work from home.
And I think I will have to assess my situation since I do maintenance in cancer clinics, in a city close to another in quarantine.
    Take care everyone.

Schools closed until Sept is going to be hell for parents. I am in Kentucky/USA and the Derby is being postponed until September! I think the biggest factor with this virus is the fact it makes everyone sick at one time slowing the production of all things. In American, we rely on China for 150 life-saving medicines and production has stopped and shipping has stopped. I hope everyone is doing well, toilet paper is out in some places but we got 24 rolls here for 20 bucks at the store with luck yesterday. I was wondering if we were going to have security escort us to the car the way things are with it. Also, read an article saying China is finally going back to work so toilet paper might be coming back soon?
