what's been really lacking in pvp areas is the ability to hide due to bases/ships showing up on the map/mini map..

why not let individual server admins specify in their configs if bases, ships etc can be seen on the map and mini maps? how about a switch to complete remove mini map from screen?

I recall a three sided conflict event some years ago by the ARMCO clan in Space Engineers known as PvPvP. Three teams went at it in open space over the course of several weeks. A lot of problems were encountered, as SE isn't natively amicable to this sort of game. One of the biggest issues was simply finding other teams. The only way to find people was to be lucky enough to randomly warp in close enough for visual acquisition.

Empyrion's more condensed play areas and detector tool largely solve this problem. Perhaps they do solve it too well, though. If detection and evasion thereof are going to be a pvp mechanic, some questions are going to need considering. We have devices for actively detecting objects, but what about passive detection? What are the downsides of each? What should a ship be capable of doing to counter each type? How effective should these countermeasures be?

Simply letting servers be setup so players have to actively scan for other players with their detector to keep them on the map/minimap sounds like a easy first step to try.
