The multitool "retrieve blocks" setting can also successfully mine surface ore rocks. I've tested it on Iron, Copper, Erestrum, Zascosium, and got 1 0r 2 ore each time. Confirmed. Works on Rocks as well. Got 15 Crushed Stone from "retrieving Blocks" with the Multitool T2. SP/Survival/Vanilla - Arid Starter Planet.
Actually, it's picking up the ore automatically. It's not dropping them on the ground, which was a problem with drills. Might be possible to get drills to finally pick up surface rocks.
Looks like it's only picking up half though (one of the two rocks), similar to how the HV harvest module used to get them. Suspect it's a bug and this feature will get removed, just as they remove the harvester ability to get surface rocks (which I rather liked).
It IS called a "Multi-Tool" after all. I consider this an enhancement, not a bug. It's also less efficient than a drill.
