Lol! I lost my first GV the same way! Started parking way in the distance and running at the tower. The rockets seem to leave you alone when on foot and you just have to dodge the plasma cannons. Run inside and salvage the core to disable tower. It is much easier to attack with a SV with rocket launchers.
