It would be cool if we could some day assign ships to alien races.
    I'd definitely add this one!

I just watched an episode of star trek voyager, it was called rise, a maglev carriage on a tether to an orbital facility from planet surface.

I just built a base with a tether going up very high, anda cv that slots into it, then filling in 2 blocks to seal it centre.
    Untitled.png
The carriage requires no rcs and has only 2 thrusters for up and down, the carriage travels up the tether perfectly reaching the top which was designed to keep structural integrity, and an elevator to get on the last leg.

I added a docking leg on the roof of the carriage in the hope that it would dock on the underside of the top structure, however it does not seem to dock.

Still though, I just made a tether elevator XD

thanks man, it means now that i can attach elevators onto the sides of actual bases and such now, this was just a test demo to see if it would function well and it does.

The person who made atlantis city for example, could now make elevators for the tall buildings using cv :D

next to make a skyscraper with an elevator shaft, then make an elevator from CV but only a single block dimension for up and down, which can then be dropped in a hole in the roof and seal in to provide an actual internal building elevator xD

I hope these ideas are rubbing off on someone, by all means if it tickles your fancy make something out of it and show us what you come up with !

I am already considering a base to base monorail with a cv that travels along the rail.

OK so the maglev carriage is now 02 sealed also ;)

Tidied up the design a bit, I found that if you turn off the autobrake, she will go up or down by herself after an initial thrust :D almost like a real elevator haha

EDIT: Up until last patch or 2 Cv were able to dock on base, cannot do it anymore for some reason, else i would have had a landing leg on the roof to dock to the upper base, then i could turn power off in carriage without it going into freefall (also fun lol)

I swear this gets better and better, much fun playing with this :D

Wow that looks pretty big. How big is this one ? I would love to see this CV vs a squad of SVs.

"Finished" the prototype of a new design (as much as you can speak of being finished with a prototype, lol)

    NewGame_3_2017-09-03_05-07-50.png
I learned a bit more about signal logic and that i'm really bad in creating interiors when there's only little space left. :D
Next ship will be similar to this, but i will use different Materials and only the outer hull will be combat steel. It will also be bigger than this one, because it is cramped devices and very little safe distance between Fuel tanks and other things.

A question to the more experienced ppl. here.
Do you consider Armored windows in general as a secure alternative to other blocks, or should i wait for energy shields before building paper thin ship hulls again?
(I miss having a view to the outside when walking in corridors.)

I've never had issues with Armored windows, but some people take issue with them. For the Carmine Vanquisher, which was specifically a combat vessel, I kept windows to a minimum and double-layered them, which kills the view a little but stands up to everything short of a tactical nuke.
...Hell, come to that, the windows in the Nephilim took a sustained pounding from various POIs while I was making the video for it, and even single-layered they barely got scratched.

Bottom line, unless you're specifically trying to court the PvP crowd, armored windows should be just fine in moderation :)

@Furious Hellfire That is an extremely cool concept. I really like the idea of having various transportation devices like that in game. This needs to be a thing. I wish I'd thought of something like this when I started building my space station. Hrm...I wonder if I could add something underneath on the exterior.

@oojimaflip Holy crap that thing is a monster! You guys don't disappoint.

@Neal Loving the new ship type.

So the last time I posted stuff, I'd been toying around with architecture. Ramps, curves, skyscraper-esque things.

And then I thought, "well, what if I made it a CV?"
One thing I've always wanted to do was build a vertical CV - I like tall, narrow designs - but never had any inspiration for it until now.
    Sierra.jpg
This is the Sierra - currently about 40% done with the exterior hull. The wing on top will have a duplicate below, once I find the right median for it (those slopes are a pain and I'd rather not have to tear it up for being a block or two off). Current plans are for a civilian 'LXS' model, and a combat 'MIL' which replaces the decorative feathering on the wings with extra layers of armor plating, and the usual thruster/RCS/fuel capacity improvements to handle additional weight and size.

Concept is loosely based on the "VGF Tigris" fighter I made (about a decade ago) when I was playing with Freespace 2 modding. VGF_Tigris9.jpg
And because I know it'll bug @Fractalite , yes it'll have space for a HV, but I'm not saying how. ;)

@Neal , Love the new design. Publish the tight one anyway, I want to try it!!
@Kieve , Wow, That looks cool. Can't wait to see it finished, and see just where you put the HV dock. LOL
@oojimaflip , What a Monster, but a really far out design.

@Kieve What I've found with vertical builds like that is that it really messes with the 3rd person camera point of view. Just a heads up. Very cool ship though!

Yeah, Sadly I can't take credit for that; the ship is a rebuild of a Space Engineers ship, a very particular ship that holds quite a special place for me as it was the catalyst for my love of big ships made almost entirely from greeble! ;)
It has changed a little from the original as thruster setups don't carry over very well from SE. I also made a few small errors while doing the conversion process* that lead to bits being one or two blocks away from where they really should be, usually in the forward axis, but after throwing down several thousand blocks the last thing I wanted to do was redo anything, the changes are pretty inconsequential anyways and unless you have the original and this thing side by side you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.... hell, I know these ships inside and out and I still can't see the differences, I know they're there though!

    * the conversion process is not automated in any way... It's just me, running SE and Empy and alt-tabbing between and copying block for block, by eye, while trying to maintain decent frames of reference.... This is the second time I've done it and I won't be doing it again anytime soon! :D

I haven't decided if I will put it on the workshop yet... it feels a bit disingenuous somehow:(

    Maybe...
I'm really not sure, because i plan to create a one that is at least 1/3 bigger, and i hesitate to have two almost identical designs in the worksop. But on the other hand, why not?

There's just too little interior space which makes it feel a bit claustrophobic to me, lol.
Stuff, like Ammo boxes just stand in the corridor and are not particularly safe and all sorts of stuff like that. Just doesn't feel right.

    That's great news!
And no, PvP isn't my thing as you may know and my ships are in particular not made for that.
I just want to avoid making the same mistakes i made when building my early Star Trek ships.
(like creating paper thin hulls and not thinking about safety in general. Maybe i'll rework all of them one day.)

    Regarding the Quasar:
I'm deeply impressed by how well it is received!
Many thanks to everyone helping me creating it.
(I just had to say this, even if it's off topic.)

    Hey,

Nice work. Tell me, is this working reliably for you? I played around with various things on "rails" ages ago - basically a tram system for getting between parts of a large BA - and I had huge issues with the two entities clipping into each other and one catapulting off into the air. However, I was using SV's as the shuttles, not a CV as you're using for your lift, so possibly that's the key? My attempts at using an HV with only fore/aft thrust on a CV went nowhere either. With no one elses work to compare it to, at least not that I was aware of, I thought it unworkable.

Next time I have a chance to play, I might tinker with this again. Similar to your design, I had wanted to create a mobile viewing platform on one of my BA's ages ago...but that failed too lol.

Thought: if the remote registry setting to power down a device (thrusters) actually worked, I'd be safe when I inevitably fell off the thing in it's raised state lol.

    Scoob.

Yes it is working reliably atm, I considered during building that it might fail in the way you mentioned, block clip and physics catapult, but it works fine ! the blocks are tight together between the cv and base and they dont come out, Occasionally I may need to hold the O key for auto level, as I noticed rare occasions the lift will stick half way, a quick press of O and your on your way again, but for durability sake i have been testing this by ramming full speed up and down repeatedly into the top and bottom blocks, no issues so far.

After my posts last night i refined the design and now have a full working base at the top of that tether with SV parked on the roof.

Oh yeah during initial construction I was in survival and a drone came and shot out the core while i was not noticing, the core was the very bottom block of the tether... you can imagine what happened next lol.

Anyway I will be uploading a finished product today ! will keep you posted.
