I played with the number and around 60 - 70 was a good balance. Thanks for the tip.

New data, I think we are seeing issues, in part, due to the left hand rule vs center axis. After doing some more structured testing I found that the pull from the RCS's changed with the Roll position. This would explain the inconsistency plus it appears RCS's will fight with each other not too unlike if all thrusters in every direction fire off at the same time. The length, width and height of the ship seems to change the angular drag for ship as well. The distance the RCS is from center counters this effect. How this is calculated though does not seem to scale well as smaller ships do not appear to have a noticeable problem with it.

I have posted a suggestion on a possible change that makes sense to me.

Thank you for the compliment. If you are using winrar or winzip some people seem to be having trouble unzipping the file. Do you have another unzipper you can try?

New lesson learned (the hard way as usual).

Started building my first real CV and was basically done with the CV and even had a SV docked in the hangar.

Had 1 more item on my list of things to-do, make a couple big flat SV to use as a hangar doors.

After a couple hours of work on just the door (due to the size difference I think the door had more blocks than the entire CV) and adding guide rails to the side of the CV for it to slot into I was almost done and then ...........

Everything started shaking, walls started buckling, the CV and docked SV and the new door SV all tried to merge and then there were the explosions from all 3 involved crafts. It was an interesting show and I wish I had recorded it to share and watch again.

End result, the SV door was blown off and about 100m away, the CV and docked SV were heavily damaged (and I thought space drones were bad) to the point of being scrap.

Now I know what this type of thing is not done very often.

The lesson learned, exit and make a backups more often. I lost about 3 hours of work.

    Oh well, it happens.

    :)

Ok think I'm ready for testing of my first full CV build.

I present the Timex_S1 (should have named it The Redundant).
It's not intended to look pretty, it's intended to survive and hopefully win the fight.
Still, it could be a Borg hillbilly cousin looking like something the Clampets would drive. :)

    General Stats:
    Mass: 5.55kt
Hull Thickness: Overall minimum of 2 blocks except for the hangar area, front is up to 5 blocks thick in places for combat
Operation Time: 45min at full thrust with only the main fuel tanks filled, the spare tanks add another 5-10 min flight time
Cockpits: 2, lower forward cockpit is main, upper cockpit is backup
Gravity generators: 2, 1 each compartment, full overlap of effective area
Fuel Tanks: 24 large main tanks in rear compartment, 8 small emergency/backup tanks, 4 by each cockpit entrance
(Note: Originally the fuel tanks were only 2 per isolation bay but I doubled them for increased flight time.)
Generators: 4, 2 in each compartment
RCS Units: 12, 6 in each compartment
Constructors: 2, 1 in each compartment
O2 tank+station+medic station: 3 sets, one set in each compartment and the 3rd by the upper cockpit
Turrets: lots and all kinds, want to see what works and what doesn't in testing
Entrances: 2 top single door above the elevator shafts, 1 each side and rear double door (airlock style), double doors between compartments for isolation in case of severe damage to either section.

    Perspective.png Front View.png Rear View.png Lower CP.png Lower CP View.png Top CP.png Top CP View.png Rear Compartment.png Front Compartment.png

Frankly I think it looks more like a Model-T than a space ship. :p

Interesting that I have no window blocks and even have hull blocks in front of the cockpit but can still see very well, some of the extra hull blocks and the center weapon mount do add some obstruction to the lower cockpit view but it's very minor I think (if you look at the front view the red block is the one just in front of the cockpit controls, same setup up top).

Even with only 12 RCS units it handles as well as any SV I ever flown, very responsive in all directions.
The large forward thrusters allow it to break fast and backup at full speed (ideal for leading a drone to it's death)
The fuel tank isolation bays should prevent a chain reaction if something does manage to pierce the hull.

I tried to make it as redundant as was reasonable, with 2 constructors I should be able to repair almost any damage even if 1 compartment is totally trashed. Same with the thrusters, there are enough that it's unlikely that it will be disabled quickly if at all.

The big question is will all the turrets actually do anything to help or just be a hindrance, time to test it in combat.

    Hi everyone,

this is my first contribution to this forum, and i'd like to share with you my vision of a Star Destroyer.
Maybe it's not very uncommon, but this is a legendary vessel I really like.

This ship is 116 blocks long, 63 blocks width and 38 blocks height.
    Total mass : 31,8 kt
Energy consumption will moving : 130 MW

I spent few weeks making it (50% in survival and 50% in creative, was tired to go mining for hours).
It has a huge hangar for SV, two areas for plants, three cockpits at differents places, many generators/RCS/fuel tanks at differents places too.

Please have a look at it, and tell me your opinion !!!

Thanks to devs, this game is awesome !

that looks great, the model t looking spaceship, u do get better wit htime, practice, practice :) but look at a spaceship design and try to do the ship, no way u can do it exacly as not enough of blocks t omake what u want, as I do, but it does turn into something nice

as for the star destroyer, its looks great, a bit over kill for the guns, as I would put maybe 1/2 of what u got, like 1 every 2, also amazed that it runs with only 3 fuel pods :)

The Model-T wasn't designed, it evolved.

After placing the starter block and laying out the center line blocks in all 4 directions (red/blue for front and back with yellow for the sides) I just started placing the needed items and creating the layout as it went.

My first concerns were the RCS units, after reading about some of the difficulties and counter productive effects in certain placements I decided to center line them as much as possible. With only 12 (and I'm not sure I need that many) it handles much better than I would have expected after reading about other builder's problems.

The only other major considerations were to try and isolate the fuel tanks to some extent to prevent chain reactions and make a separate compartment for the fuel tank area with backup tanks placed elsewhere just in case the worst happened.

Then just get redundant with just about everything else in the 2 compartments and second bridge.

So far in actual combat the only real problem I have had are the turrets, they seem to be magnets for incoming fire and do more damage than the drones do when they blow up. Currently the turrets available don't have the range to even be useful and except for the largest one they don't have enough firepower to accomplish much of anything anyways. :(

But like you said, practice practice practice.

Maybe my next one will come out looking like the old VW Bug instead of a Model_T. lol

Bad News from combat tests. :(

After some good old fashion testing in actual combat I have found that turrets on a CV are basically worthless against space drones except as target practice for the drones (and to do extra damage to your CV when hit). The don't have the range to even activate before they are blown off the CV and on the rare chance they do get the chance to fire only the largest has enough firepower to do any real damage.

This is almost an exact echo of the turrets currently available for a HV, no range and no hitting power.

Hoping this changes in the near future but for now the only turrets worth using are the rocket turrets for a BS and even they are problematical at the best of times.

I have submitted a bug report about the turret activation issue. Our turrets seem to active at ~350m when Laser drones will start attacking from 1km. On top of that there is a bug where the range is from your camera and not your turret or ship. A workaround is to rotate your camera closer to the drone but you need to be able to take a beating while you line things up.

I am sure CV's and everything that goes along with them are going to be changing as they become more relevant
