This was posted in the Steam forum as well. I figured more veteran builders might see it here first.

Hey builders it would be great to see a few hauler HVs in the workshop. We desperately need some with the new blocks and using the weight/volume system. I am terrible at building from scratch but amazing at modifying an existing build. I am looking for a mid to large hauler for daily mining and scavenging. Thanks in advance.

Check out @XCaliber https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEZwdWsjmBLBTn-_Czk3BFg , upcoming challenge to build hauler HV's. Main function to dismantle POIs and bring back (to base) the goods. Alternatively also be able to take down POIs and/or mine.

Also there are some issues and bugs with Cargo Controllers and that.
I do not use weight&volume in my SP's, so do not really care yet.

EDIT: BTW there are several that have Let's Plays and similar on YouTube (and Twitch). Can watch there what they build and the performance. See the media section in the forum, I also have posted several links there to streamers.

On the Steam workshop there often the "good looking" builds got the exposure. Where the real "workhorses" that performs good when you play survival, get few votes. Also 9.x is pretty fresh with changes happens, so take a bit time before new (and good) builds get noticed.

Is there any dummys guide to how to refit older builds and new builds or is this new system too early in testing to make this yet as a guide?

Only larger builds can be converted somewhat easy. Due to the space extensions takes, then the weight need even more thrusters and RCS's.
So no obvious way to do it, depends very much on the build.
Test what goes in one maxed Cargo Container (32K L for HV/SV).
You can always substitute hull blocks with extensions, double HP than small vessel steel blocks, same cost.

What I dont understand with this new system is how to make sure the volume and weight is balanced and to make sure performance is adequate. Especially with home brewed builds as im learning. I have seen spanj and excalibur do take off tests in their videos and I havent yet understood appropriate weight to lift ratios. I am curious if the devs have in mind speciality hulls . So for example if you make the ship a hauler specialty the trade off would be maybe for this example fewer hardpoints to place because the ship is designed for efficient cargo storage. This brings in my mind all the gear head stuff I did in The Traveller rpg for ship designs. I enjoy the various options you have in this game.

One of the reasons why I turn Cargo volume & weight/mass off. It only adds time doing stuff that is not fun for me.
You end up with huge builds, unless want to travel many times to get stuff from one place to another.
Or build a version with just extensions and bare minimum of other devices.
Can always slap it in the BluePrint Factory (still), just get a "nomad" cargo BP.

XCalibers HV POI hauler "Challenge", will probably expose the insane amount of RCS's and thrusters needed, if to have some protection and cargo capacity. Maybe I participate with this https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1674361892 . Only 224 RCS's, roughly 64K L volume.
Many (and I) have suggested improvement of movement devices for HV, way before V&W.

Hi. I only build my hv's with the new system and if you want an idea of what to do to make it balanced, I basically just build in creative and then load up a throw away survival world and spawn it in with cheats and then load it up to the brim. But generally what I have learned doing this all the time is as long as the cargo extensions are symmetrical and centered the craft works fine. What is also nice is they have higher hp than default steel blocks so ealy game you can use them as armor and storage at the same time and they even have a few different shapes so making something simple and nice to look at works great. if you would like to see a good example of a late game hv with them I have a large one on the workshop.
keeping the wight balanced is not that hard but making sure you have enough thrusters to move is another story I have found that more is better if you are wondering if you have enough then you probably need more. for example to move 10 k iron ore up a hill I needed about 8 large thrusters on the back lol. I could have probably done it with 6 but it would have been really slow.
there is a bug (not sure if a bug or intended) that can help when loaded up with things that are too heavy to go up a hill, if you connect to the container and place the heavier items in the hot bar it then only counts volume for those items until you move them back into the container.

I think an easy solution would be to disregard balance and simply count the total weight. It shouldn't matter where the weight is on the ship just count it all as equal weight. Otherwises we are spending hours trying to balance ships. That way we have much more freedom in building... Old BPs can be retrofitted easily and the weight still matters for gameplay.

that does seem like a nice balance however I'd make a change, separate weight and volume into two separate settings like a difficulty. right now its either all or nothing but making it into "off" or "volume" or "weights and volume" like easy medium and hard. setting it to "volume" would work how you suggest.
