Always keep a few energy bars in your suits constructor...doesnt add weight, and doesnt go bad, and there in a pinch.
Honestly, I do to now. The planet in my new play through has protein everywhere. So when I am running around I always just keep it churning them out. Makes the need for food somewhat moot until well after you have time to build a farm/whatever.
I use it for the times when there is a TP malfunction and I have a 10-15 min walk in space back to a orbital station lol
You can produce things in the factory and not spawn them. So go ahead and build a spare SV. There will come a time where you arent paying attention and you will get your warp drive blasted, generators blown, or something similar. OR even dumber, you will accidentally hit F and jump out of our SV when its WAY too high to get back to. So with a spare SV you can at least keep moving.
except for the the server has enabled spawn ONLY on base or CV as many of them do now a days (rendering the rescue sv/hv useless)
LOL! Can't count the times I stupidly did this, some people never learn ... Last time I was on the moon, but had wireless in my SV and had some Base Starter blocks in my cargo, so I plopped down a Base Block then built an elevator. I ALWAYS carry elevator blocks, they're handy. Problem solved Tips for Beginners - If you've read this far, you know what you need, but here's a couple things I found that really help. 1. Shotgun early on. Yes, you can kill spiders, Zirax, etc with the chainsaw or Survival tool, but the shotgun is safe and faster. 2. When you get to the Hover Vehicle, fix it up. When you can afford it add a Hover ENGINE (the GREEN one) one will do, it lets you run over water which the stock Ground Repulsers do not. Fastest / safest way to get around the planet is over water when you can, no trees or baddies to stop / kill you. Also add a constructor and cargo box. When you can, add a Wood / Ore box and a Harvester as many mentioned. VERY big item to have. 3. Pro Tip: REALLY watch what happens (lower left between Stats and the Toolbar) when you kill / harvest something. Example: Killing a Tellarapod ( green water creature) when in TALON territory gives a real relationship boost, but cutting TREES will drive it down. But cutting trees in Zirac territory RAISES your rep with them!! Real fast way to level up and boost your rep with those slimy b@stards if you've a mind to do that, LOL. Cutting trees and killing creatures with the harvester is the fastest way to advance up the levels. Pay attention the points, they're not always the same depending where you are and different creatures are more valuable. 4. Your drill is your friend. Water is broken in this game, it doesn't flow into holes. If you are underwater no weapons will work, but the DRILL does. If you're attacked underwater DRILL down and you'll find you're now on LAND since the water doesn't flow. Whip out your shotgun and blow the Zirax or Tellarapod away! Also good for using your drone to mine submerged (or partially) POI's and wrecks while you're breathing normally. Oh yeah - carrying tools or weapons will glue you to the bottom. To swim push 0 (ZERO) for your hands. (U) takes your helmet on and off if you have armor. 5. You drill is your friend. ASAP get a T2 drill (big difference). Use it to attack POI's from below by drilling a tunnel from beyond weapons range, avoids all the weapons and patrols. Blow a hole near a corner underneath (a couple blocks from the edge). You usually need Explosive Packs to do this. You'll usually come up in a fairly safe area with limited troops. Use the filler function to build a ramp up into the POI. 6. Your drill is your friend. If you drill out a base entrance starting in shallow water (heading towards land) and make an underground base the bad guys can't enter, they don't like water. Another strategy is to drill an underground base under an existing wreck like the Large Wreckage at the start. When the Drones show up their weapons can't get at you underground and they can shoot up the wreckage all they like, LOL! If you build using blocks, or better, an elevator going UP to the wreckage, it becomes part of your base. You can then place turrets on the wreck to shoot the drones down, then run out and loot them while being totally safe during the attack. 7, Your drill is your friend. Nah, enough of that. REALLY get Armor early, gives you light (L key) and a remote drone (F5). Use the drone to mine and loot wrecks instead of trying to climb them! TIP: If you're going to mine ore, stand on your Hover Vehicle while using the drone. BEFORE you start, use the SPACEBAR to raise your HV as high as possible. This protects you if spiders or other nasties show up to attack your body while you're droning underground and distracted. Be prepared to F5 or ESC to get back to your body to fight 'em. 8. ALWAYS PUT THE SAME TOOLS IN THE SAME PLACES ON YOUR TOOLBAR! It helps to be OCD on this so you can grab your weapon or tool quickly, it will save your life. Like my shotgun is always #2, my Multitool is always #4, but #6 or 7 are used for when I'm switching blocks or other items. I also suggest you always organize your cargo boxes in the same pattern, helps when switching bases and vehicles. That's it for now! Have fun!
If you are playing with Mass/Vol enabled: When you start mining the first deposits its sometimes a challenge to carry all of the ore around. Craft 2-3 survival constructors and plop one down right next to the deposit. Send your drone down to mine, and once you get full, drop the ore into the survival constructor and start making ingots. Once the deposit is mined out, just leave the constructor their grinding away. Move to the next deposit and continue. At any given times (early on) I may have three of these constructors out making ingots. I can then drop those ingots into the factory to spawn my hv/sv that has he capacity to carry more and then lugging ingots around is MUCH easier than raw ore. So I spawn it, run around to my survival constructors and gather up the constructor and contents. Method cuts down on multiple cargo trips hauling ore.
Seeing this topic and wanting to put out some of my own early survival tips and surely something may have cime earlier, but i think is valuable. 1. Familiar yourself with how all resources look. Most of the time it's easier when you remember how a certain plant or resource rock looks like, spotting it from afar. Especially important if you need lots of buds for Coffee to stay warm (snow world), looking for food or struggling with an ailment. 2. Don't hesitate to upgrade gear, it's always worth it. Drill T2 > Drill T1 > Survival tool Shotgun T2/ Sniper T2 > Shotgun T1/ Sniper T1 > Pistol Thruster M2 > Thruster M > Thruster S 3. Always keep a lookout at your surroundings. Regularly check your map or minimap, it could warn you of an incoming threat to you or your SV/HV/CV (when you're away from it). 4. Supplement to #1. Learn where you may find resources that are hard to find (for example offworld ores can be found on some enemies in small quantities). Alternative sources of equipment and resources found in wrecks, abandoned building, enemy structures or creatures/enemies can help you advance faster than simply crafting everything. Mid to late game you will need more of what you found, but at the starter planet all of that will give a significant advantage.
GREAT tip! This made me think of something I forgot to add to my post about Harvesters and Wood. I do a similar thing with wood. Once you have a little Iron you can use your Survival Constructor (TAB, then switch on top right) to make the Portable Constructors. I make a LOT of them (I usually don't play with Mass/Vol enabled). I'll make like 10 of them and have them in my vehicle at all times. I'll slap them all down and split the wood from my Harvester amongst them, tell then to make fibers, then go about my business. When I come back I repeat with the fibers to make Bio-Fuel. They're great in that they don't TAKE fuel to MAKE fuel like a regular Constructor will. As is mentioned earlier several times you can put Bio-Fuel into a base or POI Fuel tank then withdraw it and it gives you small Promethium Fuel Packs. What's cool is that you can then make them into Explosive Packs for blowing into POI's! Also gives you virtually unlimited fuel for your Bases and Vehicles. I always have some C4 handy ... LOL Next time I start a game I'll turn on Mass/Vol for a challenge.
Yup, survival constructors are a pretty darn useful tool. They have unlimited volume, so they are only limited by the amount of internal slots. Whenever I start a new game my first priority is level 3 for a shotgun, and at least 2 survival constructors. One for storing "stuff" and one dedicated to churning out biofuel. Set them up, spend about 10 minutes zapping trees and fill it up and get it churning that fuel. Keep putting in logs and by the time you gather the material for a SV/HV fuel wont be an issue. I believe the trader on the starter planet will also purchase biofuel, so it can be an easy way to make some money early on. Oh, and another tip for new players: use the planetary trader. I neglected him for a long time, and mucked through a bunch of stuff that was unecessary. They can repair ships, provide ammo, drill charges/multi-charges, medicines. Craft a few shotguns, assault rifles, and sniper rifles and sell them.
You keep reminding me of things I wanted to add! When you visit the Traders be SURE to use the Transporter!! It can take you to the Trade Station in orbit which has Traders with things the on planet station doesn't carry or will buy (like Night Vison Goggles). You can make a lot of money fast once you've looted some POI's. Didn't know that one for the longest time. While at the Trade Stations BE SURE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE O2 FILLUPS AND ARMOR LOCKERS / REPAIR STATIONS AVAILIBLE FOR FREE!! It's cool you can get your weapons and Armor fixed for free!!
Guys, you dont have to climb to your flying vessel that is stuck in mid air. You can turn them off remotely, and they will fall to the ground. Just enter the registry(the menu has no shortcut, but it is next to the factory button at the top of the screen), select you vessel and there is a power button in the right corner.
Wow, talk about timing. What a great tip!! I just reported a bug in 1.4 that has my CV bouncing up and down about 50m when approached after being away with the thrusters OFF. I got on it by hovering over it in my SV, waiting until it popped up and jumping on the top of it. Naturally, the first try I landed on a sloped block , slid off and fell 50m breaking my leg... LOL. I reloaded the game and was successful on my 2nd try. Turned on the thrusters and the bouncing stopped, so I went up to recover my SV which was floating @ 60m. Had to jump from the CV to the SV, totally a leap of death of 50 feet (sorry still think mostly in feet). Pulled it off (my Wife in the next room asked me why I yelled WOOT! ... HA). Docked the SV in the CV and I was good. Sure wish I'd known this trick earlier! Can't count the number of times I've had a "floater". Best I'd come up with was to place a base block and built and elevator ... This is still a great tip for this reason, but great to know you can just hit an F key and get a floater back with a click. ================= Tip for noobs - ALWAYS place a WiFi block in your bases and ships. Bigger ships need two, one fore, one aft. Park your vessel near a POI you've taken and you can use F4 to transfer your loot directly to the vessel.
New player so I'm assuming vanilla. Here's the top 10 things I've learned during my first playthrough. 1) On Akua in the supply bunker POI is a large constructor that you can use for free. The androids, I guess, keep it fueled for you. Don't take this location as a base, or destroy it, until you don't need it anymore. 2) In between the starter moons is a destroyed SV that always has a warp drive. The core on this ship is claimable, hit P and set the faction to private. You do need at least one gun on the SV you use to get to it. If you bring some extra fuel/oxygen you might even do what I did and just salvage the ship you rode in on and fly this one back to base for a little(ok a lot) repair and just use it. 3) Masperon has mushrooms you need for anti-radiation meds so you can go to skillon without getting cooked. 4) A shower washes away radiation. Use it before you get to 1.0 personal radiation or you risk radiation sickness. 5) You need Promethium to operate a MultiTool. You need to be able to get to and operate on Skillon to harvest the Promethium metorites until you can leave the starter system. 6) You are safe within your ship for the most part so use your drone from within your ship for as much as you can get away with. 7) If you stand just inside the door and face into the ship/base your drone will apper outside the base through the door. This means you don't need a drone hatch on your ship, or enough room inside to pop a drone. just need enough room outside the door. After you do this use the drone to push yourself away from the doorframe. I've done this and then started choking to death because a few minutes later I hadn't moved but suddenly the game decided I was partially out the door. 8) There is no enemy presense on the starter moons so base attacks don't happen there. Don't be afraid to build a base because the youtuber you saw was getting ganked by zirax. 9) Capital Vessels have far more cargo capacity than HV/SV do. Even a basic starter CV will be a massive upgrade to your ability to salvage. 10) Deconstructor returns 100% of the components from salvaged modules. Put one at your base next to your Constructor. Then don't use salvage mode unless you have to or don't need the components. 11) In order to dock an HV at an SV or CV, or an SV at a CV, you must have landing gear/docking pads installed. If you don't, the ship you landed on will not fly.
Did not know that. I usually queued up the second "Cobalt moon" in factory and used the teleporter to get to Omicron and spawn it there for movement. I guess CV was meant here.
