It might be a bit complex to account for potential inappropriate names, but perhaps it could be a good idea to implement a mechanic to rename a planet or system. Single player needs little protection needed to implement, since single player. Multi Player: - Might need an admin-level implementation to green-light names - Perhaps could use a list of inappropriate words or something similar easily modifiable to help filter out "bad" requests An idea would be to implement such requests with a station and pay an upfront fee. It could be attributable to a single user or an entire faction. There could be a configurable limit to how many planets a player or faction can own, or perhaps a timer to limit how fast one can buy out the whole unclaimed galaxy. It would make it more convenient for factions with planets or systems to manage their bases or facilities.
Are there such planets? I find the names baffling as to their origin wondering how they were decided upon. I find many of them difficult to pronounce, but, as a Single Player, I never speak them out loud so it doesn't matter. But bad, offensive names? Really?
The multiplayer side of it would definitely be problematic. Needing admins to approve names due to inappropriate behavior could put way too much work on admins (there are a LOT of potential planets after all), and so it would definitely need to be an optional setting to either activate or deactivate. Alternatively it could have an automatic check for inappropriate names, but it would have to run all languages and that could turn into a nightmare real quick. It could create increased strain due to needing to check for name updates from all clients regularly. It could also create some issues for the database and potential corruption over time. The developers would also have to make it so the names in teleporter addresses adjust on the fly as well without breaking any of the player or POI teleporters (POI especially with the manual addresses set up). I do like the idea and am not trying to be critical of it. Just thinking off the top of my head.
They're generated randomly upon discovery, so not sure it's even possible to have custom names. There's no way to have access to the galaxy map for stars, planets are even one step deeper. Names are picked from various files in the Content\RandomPresets\NameGenerationData folder. We can see in the Resources.nameBuilder.yaml file that names are composed of random syllables, that's why it sometimes gives strange results.
I'd like to see a system in place that just allows the player to change the name of the planet visually. Just allow the changes to be visible in the client. I fly into a system, discover a lava planet called Zebrough by the game and I can rename it in my client to "Dumb Lava Planet" if I wanted. Other players would see Zebrough, but I would see Dumb Lava Planet.
I came to these forums with this same idea in mind. I believe it makes a lot of sense to allow players to rename planets and systems, maybe with the exception of starter systems. Whether it's the first discoverer who gets to make the change, or a paid "service" (either via bidding system, or just a flat-fee FCFS type deal), and of course a little filtering/moderating. Telling your friends you're building a base on New Venus sounds way cooler than QBHZD III.
