I think I have resolved the issue for me glitching through the ground. I went on the game earlier and noticed my fps was up at 75 after about 5 minutes in game it dropped to about 40 then a few minutes later down to 12 fps. I came out of the game did some head scratching and googling and as a result checked my GPU temp which was up around 80 degrees C, pretty high when not gaming. Did some more searching and found a video on how to clean and reapply thermal paste. The GPU was properly dusty inside so Im was not surprised it was overheating. Anyway, I have been on the game for 20 minutes fps is stable at 75 and gpu temp was at 80 degrees C when in game. Right now the gpu temp is 35 degrees C.

I must have been cleaning my gpu as you were writing this. Thanks for your help with this, it is very much appreciated. Just need to figure out the best settings now on the 1060 for empyrion and how to create game profiles in the NV software.

That's really good news, glad you've gotten to the bottom of it. I think hitting 75c during a gaming session isn't considered particularly excessive these days, though 80c does seem to be a point at which many GPU's start to throttle. My 1070 only very rarely sees over 60c - and that's on a hot day, mid-summer - as Palit to their credit have put a very good air cooler on this card. Add to that using something like Afterburner (ThunderMaster is Palit's version) to manually set a slightly more aggressive fan profile and temps should remain good. My card by default actually only engages the fan when the card his 60c, then it works quite hard for a short while before switching off - that's perhaps what you were hearing with yours. With my current profile, the fan is always spinning, but it's usually near silent and the constant air-flow means it never really gets that hot.

I usually fully water cool, but when I built this system in November 2019, I was waiting for the NV 30 series to launch, so stuck with the air-cooled 1070, which in its self had been intended as a temporary card while I waited for the 1080ti to launch. However, the 1070 proved way more capable than I imagined, so I just stuck with it, waiting to what was next. The 20 series wasn't very impressive so I planned to wait for the 30 series. While I can buy one now, I ain't paying an additional 100% price premium for one!

If you're struggling to create a game profile, give me a nudge and I'll take a screenshot or something to show you what I did. Not at gaming PC currently.

Absolutely certain that it was a dirty GPU that caused my issues. Been on the game for 45 minutes, Screen res was set to 2560 x 1440, quality preset set to best, colour blind filter on NV, 25 fps and GPU temp never got above 70 degrees C and fans stayed very quiet. . Not a single issue, very happy with that
