Here is your place to talk about the changed models and related feedback for the rock resources you can find in the game.

    1. Models
The new game start planet has already a few of them on the crashsite (Carbon, Iron, Copper, Silicon) and you can find more in the other biomes (Titanium > Swamp area, Neodymium > Dust/dry areas, Cobalt > cold areas)

    2. Carbon resource
With 1.8 we not only changed how you can aquire Carbon Substrate, but also where it is used.
    • Carbon Substrate is no longer crafted from plants BUT is now a resource, which means we have ROCKS on the surface, deposits (voxel and SSOR) in the ground, Meteorids and Asteroids (Space)
    • Carbon Substrate is directly harvested from these sources. There is no in-between state.
    • Carbon Substrate is the new T0 resource, replacing Iron in some templates, f.ex. those you have in your Survival Constructor (TAB). Others will follow.

Did you *want* to change the recipe for Carbon Substrate dramatically?

    It's now 2 Crushed Stone -> 1 Carbon Substrate

and boy it's a game changer for early on. Makes a lot of early blueprints far out of reach. Feels like a bug, but I'm not sure.

Also, the suit constructor needs carbon substrate template now.

Yep, the personal space heater needs carbon and you cannot make it without the portable constructor.

    Re: Carbon

Which planet(s) did you all start on?

Carbon is a minable resource now. If you start a new game and look, you can see Akua has it as a resource node. You can also find it as rocks.

@Hummel-o-War : I did a quick start on snow and desert worlds. The snow world has NO carbon rocks in the starter area, or didn't that I could find--and I went into godmode and flew around a bit to look. This makes it impossible to get a portable heater/cooler until you can make a portable constructor... which requires... carbon to make... so you can never bootstrap yourself up--you need the PC to make carbon, and can't make the PC without carbon, which means it's impossible. Additionally, I quickly found a POI ("Opportunity", I think it was?) and went in. I fell in a hole/missing block inside the POI, and because of the cold debuff, I couldn't jump up to get out. Instant trap, because I could never warm up.

I found carbon rocks on the desert start.

It appears only Akua has carbon as a minable (POI-style) resource node. Is this intentional?

I was on the swamp moon. It wasn't that big of a deal in practice. I came across abandoned POIs with furniture I could salvage for carbon substrate to build a constructor. Then I just harvested stone.

It's actually a big deal on the snow starter, where you are quickly freezing. :p

Did you not find any carbon rocks? they are dark grey/black rocks (not shown in pictures at top of this thread)

Nope, and I went searching for rocks all over for crushed stone. But like P said in the notes, moons don't have all their stuff yet.

Started on temperate. I'm enjoying them being available in abundance, especially right where you first crash. Thanks to the new decorations and the new rocks, they're easy to see. And glad for the addition of the carbon and titanium rocks. They're very easy to distinguish from the regular rocks.

This is how the new carbon rock resource looks like:

(and you can of course find it as underground voxel deposit)

OK, I get it now. I'll start a new game to get a sense of how much effort goes into first hours survival. (ps it was Skillion)

Yeah, no carbon deposits on my dedicated server running 1.8 at all.

I see the carbon rocks, Great!
I see carbon deposits on Akua only. None on Skillon.

    Great but small issues:
    1) Carbon voxels underground have Gravel texture
    2) no little icon of the deposit on the minimap
    3) no icon on the map
    4) no icon on the map Planet Information pane where Resources are listed

Else ... looks decent. My blueprints need some rework as a result of this, but it's not the "crisis, game-changer" I reported at first.

PS : Ice and Titanium asteroids still have monstrous icons on the map for the Space playfield.

By the way, the texture of the Carbon rocks *really* looks great - exactly like a lump of graphite. Although, there's a big difference between graphite and carbon-substrate (pelletized PVC plastic feed stock) so I'd make "Graphite" - what comes out of a Carbon rock or voxel - an Ore ... and refining it gives you Carbon Substrate at the usual Ore -> Ingot ratio of 5 --> 10

I tried two starts with different seeds on Ningues the ice moon and there were no carbon boulders anywhere on the planet in both starts.

I spent about half an hour in godmode scouring half the planet verifying there was not one single carbon boulder, suggesting the spawn settings for Ningues start are broken.

This makes it impossible to craft the "Portable Heater/Cooler" for thermal survival which is essential or start the production chain to get it from rocks.

The absence of carbon on Ningues makes it an impossible start.

Yup, I noticed this too, and reported it in reply #5 up above. Snow planet start is broken until it's added. :(

They did say the temperate is the primary one and that the others will be lacking some things this go around.
