thanks Zeuch, that means alot, I had very bad experience on SE, Greg and I had built a wicked station in the side of a really crappy asteroid, but we had made it fit great and we had a hanger, and were making progress with expanding into the asteroid. Then when SE added in that Grinder/welder speed setting this person turned up and started grinding all our blocks, they didn't have a ship, they were not collecting the parts, they were simply grinding block after block after block, and not just our station, they must have respwaned in over a hundred times, other bases had guns and they kept dying but eventually the guns ran out of bullets and they would then start grinding all the blocks and continue until nothing was left, Greg watched and even Shamed the guy on the SE Forum, Nothing happened, no appology for it, the server didn't get rolled back and when we went on the next day someone had taken our base as their own even though we had a beacon and everything.... Public access servers are fine for shooting games, but when you have games like this where you build stations and ships you need some security.... Sorry I rambled on but I just dont wanna suffer that nastyness again and wouldn't wish it on anyone.
@JayCo Yeah I never played on Public, and the reason for that is exactly those things you said. We had a little server for our self and everything went fine, we were like 6-7 people working and building. And then we thought, hey lets open it up for others. First thing they did was trying to ram our ships. People I say!
There will be ways to limit such behavior. Also, I plan on a sort of "standing blueprint" facility where you can set what a structure "should" look like that any other player cannot touch, that way, even if a base is deconstructed/destroyed, you will be able to order an NPC to rebuild it for you according to the standing blueprint. I envision you also being able to set NPC's to defend your base, so there will be some automated measures against hostiles. At that point "Greifing" comes at a price and difficulty, and produces little real results. They will make a hole with a small starter ship if they can get past the automated defenders, and NPC's will swarm around the damage and fix it ASAP. At that point dealing with aggressive people is a matter of paying the NPCs and making sure enough ammo and parts are on hand to deal with the standing level of local player aggressiveness. Since griefers would actually have to play the game to get enough material to get past these defenses, this should help disincentivize griefing. Please remember there will be an RTS element to our server where there will be NPC's who work for you and will protect your stuff when you are not around. I would also limit PvP to declared clan wars to start off. Since it will be just us at first, this will give us a chance to build up.
Do we even know if it works like that now? Or are you just hoping for those features @Brokenshakles ?
I will mod them in if they are not. Doing a basic path finding and unit selection interface is not terribly difficult. Especially in space. Until we get such measures, we will make sure to police invites carefully, I'm on board for the invite only structure to start off with. Also, we won't be settling in the place we start off, I want to scout out a pretty wide area and make an informed choice of where to put the HQ.
Well I am glad your on board with the idea of an invite only closed server to start off with, until we can get that NPC thing up and running its the safest way to go. As for setting up the HQ I agree also that we will need to scout out, but to begin with we will have nothing so obviously our first step is a basic operational base and then take it from there, personally I am looking forward to seeing what ships Van comes up with for exploring, I will mostly be concentratin on mining the planet and farming the land to provide the initial resources others need to progress out from our starting planet, Greg is the AMS Exploration expert (he has explored a bit more than I have in other games) and so I will leave it to him to find us other mining sites off world. I hope you plan on starting off in survival mode?????
Well, the big issue I see right now is getting you on a 64 bit machine, and finding a server to host our server group on. Edit: @JayCo , what sort of motherboard/socket are you using right now? Is it a laptop or desktop? Edit2: It looks like there won't be a dedicated server to start off with, so I will probably host everything from my quad-core i7 to start off, I can spare the 3 extra cores when I'm not doing Blender or Empyrion Mod Development.
Ah, he's already on a 64-bit machine then. His specs are pretty decent. Hmm, anyone want to throw in 5$ for Jayco? I can spot in a fiver, and there are more than 4 of us here.
Desktop Socket 1155 I think! I can look for the manual sometime if you like, But my motherboard has alot of potential upgradablility, my CPU is on the lowest end of the boards capability, I updated the Bios recently and now its supports up to 64Gb ram if I ever got that much, plus tri SLI which I have never used. Its only a bit overa year old, when I built it (with my own hands) the motherboard was actually the most expensive part and it was one of the top end ones back then, probably middle to high-low end now though with the rate these things advance. Still a very good PC though.
Things are advancing a bit slower these days, I have a top end first generation mobile i7 in my laptop that still does the job quite well. The most recent generation of proc is only about 50% more powerful per clock cycle than mine, and it's been 6 processor generations.
Cool Mine should hold up tot he task well then, So glad. Currently trying to get the wife to pre-order me the game before June 13th, But she keeps pointing out that I have a $30 credit with Steam for it... but I think I am wearing her down LOL...... Any ideas what I can offer to do round the house which could earn me the money LOL... Bear in mind I do most of the chores as I am a house-husband.
Cunnilingus? Whatever freaky-deaky sex crap she's into but is afraid to share for fear of freaking you out? You only need 15$.
@JayCo hardware should be fine to run it. I have a couple systems in my house that run about the same spec wise and they're able to run DX11, they do get a little hot, but that's what liquid cooling is for. As for his key I'll see what I can do.
Well I did plan on slowly adding in hints to my Cybernetic surgery upgrades to the RP thread so if I must be CTD then I will try to fullfill that role with as much information as I can!!!!!!
