Obviously we don't know very much yet about Empyrion because we haven't played, but I was wondering if anyone here has Wiki experience for when the time comes? Sandbox/exploration/building/crafting games tend to need one, because there is so much to learn. Any thoughts on this, you guys?
I played around with Wikis years ago and we had them in one of our classes in college. Would you guys like something like wiki.eo or would you like to run it on one the free services? MediaWiki is a great one if we run it here. But yeah we for sure need someone with their own talent to run the wiki. I find that you need a master of formatting because everyone does their own thing and it will go to hell pretty fast.
I'd suggest attempting to contact someone within the Wiki profession and see where it goes from there.
Well professionals will also suggest MediaWiki. We use it on our Terraria Site. http://terraria.gamepedia.com/Terraria_Wiki The issue is setting the templates up, formatting, and organization. The issue is that only a few unique people are really good at it. Being so so does not work out with Wiki's unfortunately only once their setup with the correct templates. When I say Templates I can install Media Wiki just fine and I'm going to setup one now as we speak to play around with. The issue is actually the template system to fitting it to our needs. The other option we can go with and it would integrate really well with the website is XenCarta. Now if you guys don't care if it's not a full fledged wiki page then I think it would work out even better. Because a lot more people in the community can contribute. We could make it look really nice if we put the effort into it. https://xenforo.com/community/resources/8wayrun-com-xencarta-wiki.98/
In my opinion, I'd prefer the legitimate wiki, gamepedia, but Xenforo.com is probably the best option, and would probably look nicer as well, so I'll go with Xenforo.com
The nice part of Xenforo is everyone can participate more and it has the built in user permissions. let's give it a try. If down the road we decide to do MediaWiki we can easily convert it over.
I agree with that. Better to try the more likely on first, and then move on to the second, if the first fails of course.
Yeah, that sounds like a solid plan, we want to know we can keep it presentable, so if Xen is the way to go for that, it's the best place to start
On some Wiki's there's been theories as how certain things in game may work logically. Such as the Halo Wiki, which attempts to explain why and how certain things work, such as weapons and vehicles, through theories. It would be quite fun and enjoyable to come up with theories of how certain things within the game world would work. And it would also give an interesting thing to read as well. But I would suggest doing this with randomly generated worlds, weapons, engines, and creatures, not user creations, as it there would be far to many. This is just an idea, that I hope will be enjoyable to do so.
I think you might be going a bit to crazy with the Wiki ideas. I think using a Wiki as a source of Fact and wealth of information is the best approach for a wiki. The forums would work out a lot better for what you are suggesting.
No need to be sorry. We all have ideas running through us constantly. No one is even run in my opinion. I think we might be just over thinking the complexity of the wiki a bit too much right now and take a step back and see what we can come up with in the near future
I think that given we are on the 'ground floor' so to speak and many aspects of the game are general 'unknowns' at this point, starting a WIKI now would serve us well in the future. We could get the WIKI going with the limited information we have and then, once the DEMO is released, no doubt there will be an influx of information added so, getting the 'shell' up and running ASAP would be a definite advantage.
Very well put sir. and thanks to Kane for all the hard work. I look forward to checking out the xenforo.
One of the primary issue of wiki is language, so far, most of the wiki which i look only on English which maybe unacceptable for some player who wanted to used their own language, i suggested to add French, Spanish, Chinese , Russian , etc so the wiki will be compatible to all multi-national user
Hi guys, if you are planning to run a Wiki about Empyrion, we are happy to share all necessary information with you. Just ask...
Sounds like we should start building a Wiki then We will need a couple of people or at least one crazy person who has some basic talent with Wiki's to help volunteer for it.
