For a PvE Ship, no need to have Fuel Tanks scattered all over, just have them separate from each other by a Block Thick Layer of Combat Steel, & consider sticking them (& at least one of the Generators) in the Core of your Ship Structure then build around it. :)

I used to build ships from the inside out, so, lay down all the critical components then wrap then in layers of steel with the less critical rooms nearer the outside. Of course, when I was doing that lag shots were quite a severe problem so it didn't really help much lol.

The last 3 days I scrapped about half a dozen designs designs partway through :(

However I came up with a good enough core room (armoured core, oxygen, fuel, generator (and space for a second one), emergency cockpit and clone tank) I'll likely re-use it in all my future capital ships.

And most importantly I at least come up with a coherent style that can be scaled from HV to CV :)

Also: why are there 41 drones logged in on the forum?

don't you know they have even an own sub-forum?
but because of all that whining there (because OP player weapons like ultra-longrange HV-Turrets and such) no human is allowed there...

On impulse, I attacked a Fortress with this thing. The results were unexpected and hilarious. My POSV lost the front thruster and the Fortress lost all of its external armament. :D Even though sheer luck played a big part it was sweet because the baddies are all maxed out.

Today in Empyrion I was inspired by @Friendly Timo 's efforts to build a CV(and his sharing it on these forums) mix in some of my own remodeling for a different thread yesterday, and the two combined has me convinced to give CV building another try(I done be terrible at buldin me some Cee Vee's!) These are my two favorite single player survival CV's:

Galactic Cargo and the Watchman(although both are modified to be cheaper and use space more efficiently)

    NewGame_26_2017-08-11_22-49-31.jpg

I am trying to use them as evidence to force myself to build smaller. Here is my first attempt:

    NewGame_26_2017-08-11_22-53-34.jpg

At around 10k iron, it is about twice as expensive as the Galactic cargo and just under twice the watchman... so, dang it, but I gotta keep on trekkin!

    My second attempt:

    NewGame_26_2017-08-11_22-57-14.jpg

I do not know what the fuck is wrong with my brain... why can I not build CV's? Argh! I am slowly getting better, improving with each design. This CV is 5.3 k, but needs a few more internals... so figure 5.5k? Maybe some more windows, so, 5.9.

    I can do this!

Smaller! More effective space usage! Less than 5 - 6k iron! Remember space for a bedroom(Vanity mirrors and space to poop! And Sandwiches, must have sandwiches!) Must be expandable but no empty space! Rawr!

So here goes try three.

Have been making significant progress lately on a proper 6.0 successor to Angelspire.

Working designation, Argentspire. Apologies for the poor lighting - orbit is great for building, but does have its disadvantages.

(The smaller prototype in the background still appeals to me, so I may complete a lesser version without the internal hangar.)

@Fractalite I would really recommend to you my NeutroExplorer, but as having 9500 Iron seems too much for you, okay, how about 1500 Iron for a full complete compact Mini-CV-Base (no internal Hanger) :p ?

Nice design! But you sure you can go around 1x1 BA-Corners/Doors etc. with your 3x5x4 SV-Block-sized Vessel?
Mine is 2x7x3 sized, the 2 blocks width makes it small enough to go through 1x1 Corner-Corridors and the 3 blocks height makes sure I have enough room above me

Nice! I am glad I got you inspired to give it a good try. I think you are just too hard on yourself, since building a small form CV can be a challenge. I mean....my current build is going to be so ridicilously massive that even when it is just perhaps half done by now, it is taking almost 300k iron. I am finding that building small CV's to be functional, pretty and low recourse can be a bit too much for me. I am trying ofcourse.

@Tyrax Lightning I tested out the turrets at the sides of my CV on creative mode, both on PvE and PvP playfields and it seems that the projectiles are that fast that once shot, the ship wont have enough time to collide with them when turning. I would imagine this would be a problem with most CV's as these vessels would turn left/right or even up/down the problem would still persist.

Another thing what I tested to make sure there was damage on creative mode with personal weapons at PvP playfields. Yeah, certainly blasted through the bridges windows with guns. But when I tried to shoot my own ship with its turrets manually, the projectiles refused to do any damage to the ship. So I guess it is not possible to shoot your own ship with your own ship?

@JDaremo Fireheart and @rucky I tried out some explosive chainreactions with different types of fueltanks, o2 tanks and rcs units to find out how much damage they do inflict around them when they explode. I did this on PvP playfield on creative mode. I don't know if creative mode plays differently that survival mode as far as damage goes. I separated all the tanks with one layer of regular steel and then tried with just stacking them. Results were interesting:

T2 and T3 fueltanks did inflict most of 25 damage around them, witch is enough for a chain explosition. Therefore, one layer of regular steel is required to stop this, nothing more. I stacked T3 fueltanks in 4x4 square and protected other similar cells with 1 layer of steel and most damage the steel got was 50 hp. Very good performance.

To my surprise, O2 tanks did not cause much damage at all; Just about 5hp at most. Even connected to each other they did not cause explosive chainreactions. Same thing with RCS units. Their own HP is 25 so it is well within their capability to take blasts from all sides and still not explode. Still I think one layer of regular steel would be a good option.

Hmm.. I am just wondering if survival mode inflicts more damage to the tanks. I think I am going to run tests there next.

I estimate that 75% of internet traffic is from bots (although some VPNs cause real human traffic to appear as bots). I monitor the bot traffic on my site to catch the bad ones and see what the others are interested in. I have such a tiny site, and there's a steady stream of bots trying to spam comments and links, and attempts to hack my site. I'm actually surprised there are so few bots here.

Sorry for going so far off topic ;)

This is extremely interesting. I really need to go around testing things too instead of just building blindly... must find out the radius of explosion as well.
Is this for BA or CV btw?

That makes sense. IRL a compressed air tank doesn't really explode if perforated, it just... opens up violently? Cannot really describe it better than that.

@En_Ma I did test on a CV. Thank you for doing tests also. I think it would be cool to actually document these since I see there is a lot of talk about shielding against explosive chainreactions with even multiple layers of combat steel and all. I think it would be handy to see what is actually needed and what would be unreasonable overkill.

Heh, that's not much more advanced than the SV I use for, well, pretty much everything including POI assaults. Obviously we have "mad skillz" to be so effective in such a vessel :)

Didn't get chance to play last night - it was Pizza and Movie night being a Friday - but noticed a new Experimental Branch update landed this morning, so going to check that out :)

Having successfully reached the weekend, i was able to bring my lastest project if not to an end, so at least to a usable state. Devices are placed, circuits are set, we are ready for the maiden voyage.
    May i present: Neu-Rabenstein:
The weaponry is merely show, of course, as this is a base, not a battleship.

The thusters are hidden behind rolling doors and ramps while inactive. A handle on the bridge activates the Thrusters and opens the doors:

The inner courtyard opens to the machine halls to both sides, with plenty of space to park both, HV and SV:
The halls are airtight, but not ventilated at the moment. The only ventilated part of the base is the main tower with cockpit, plantation (36 fields), medic station and the workshop with two advanced constructors.

If i just knew what to do with the texture! I am sorry @Kieve - you will die a little bit more now: originally i wanted to use this stone-packing-like texture, but its not available on steel of any kind, as well as the tiled roof :( And there is no other texture than combat steel, that at least remotely resembles those fissures and gap you usually find in old walls. And a knight's castle made out of marble or shiny steel? or parquet flooring?? come on...

I do feel that both the Texture and Colour tools need some right-click options to allow us to change more than just one block at a time. Often I've looked at a base or ship, visually taking in the hundreds of blocks I'd have to change one by one and abandon the idea. Simple things like painting a 3x3 grid of blocks at once would make a massive difference. "Cheaty" abilities such as being able to change all blocks at once would be welcome too, but maybe that should be limited to creative.

As for me, I've decided not to venture out into the real work today, so just gonna chill with some Empyrion :) My plan is to paint / texture some of my smaller vessel, namely my light mining HV and my tiny SV - the latter of which now sports two Gatlings and four Rocket Launchers. Those four Rockets of course take take out a turret in a single volley...seems a bit OP for such a small craft. I already nerfed a Fortress POI while testing. The SV is getting a bit heavy now though, so needs a little extra thrusts, especially downwards.

I've been enjoying some quiet painting and texturing work this afternoon also  @Friendly Timo passed the new CV to me to take a look at. First, the ship needed a name and we've both been pondering it for several days, so she is now known as DCV-Wyvern.

I started working on the "frill" section first.

I'll probably do more texturing after a break, but then I'll pass the blueprint back to @Friendly Timo to get his help with the basecoat.

You're right, this one is too big for indoor work . I started to build a micro and then decided that I wanted something a little less skittish for everyday work. This one uses the same parts as a micro with a couple of extra blocks and it's very agile while remaining easy to pilot. I built a micro for spreading cheer indoors.
The big takeaway was how much fun it was to engage the POI one rocket at a time. That makes me rethink SV design.

Today I finally got my first CV that isn't a box with thrusters to a point where I am not totally embarrassed to show some pictures. Have not done any decorating yet and still not 100% happy with the outside... some smoothing to do and those thruster placements are a bit hap hazard. Inside is mostly bare, aside from Engineering which only has the necessary at the moment. Hope you guys like it! Loosely based on the Kilrathi Fralthi class cruiser from Wing Commander.
