Your pc should outperform mine. As for the consequences of win10, I cannot say for sure.

The big Alien base, if I go inside it and install a core and hit the lights, all the lighting drops my framerate into the low teens. If I turn all those lights off, my frame rate is in the high 20s. It stays in the 20s outside and in space.

Unfortunately, the Geforce Experience application does not have recommended settings for Empyrion (yet), but in the Geforce control panel you might have a setting that is off. PhysX might be set to CPU, and Empyrion's 3d settings might need to be set manually. I can't say what's wrong, but I'd fiddle around in the Geforce control panel until I got better results.

I don't know how much background trash is running in Win10, but I would shut off...most everything. I use an application called MZ game accelerator to make 4gb adequate for empyrion. It might work for win10 also.

My PC is 5 years old:
    AMD phenom 2 x4 965 @3.4ghz
    4gb PC1333 ram
    Nvidia GTS450 /768MB Vram
    2tb 7200rpm SATA 6 HDD

I'm buying GTA V, Star Citizen and a few other titles, so I'm going to retire this PC soon.

I've held off on upgrading to Win10 because I'm apprehensive as to how some of my games might run (if at all).
The advice on changing the PhysX setting to GPU is appreciated (while I was in there I set the GPU power management to maximum performance, my PS should be able to handle the load).

My rig is not too far off from Blooddragon's:

    AMD Phenom 9950 Quad-Core 2.6 GHZ
    8 GB DDR2 1066 RAM
    GeForce GT640 (2GB)
750 GB WD Caviar Black HDD
    Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi Gamer
    Windows 7 Ultimate

    Sad story: I had 8gb ram...they were oc'd...and I had 2x GTS450 video cards.

Then I had a spark. Then I had a little smoke. I lost 2 memory banks. The sticks are fine--the motherboard won't recognize anything I put in banks 3&4. Without half my memory, SLI takes up too much to play anything without digging into virtual memory. It's a miracle this PC still powers up.

Lesson learned: get a memory cooler. Oh, and don't do what I did and tear open the case and touch the RAM right after you notice the smell. Ouch.

    @Deathbyspoon

Be sure after the windows update your notebook ist not running in power saving mode.
It's most common problem on notebooks after new OS install.

Also if your notebook has 2 graphic cards, check if Empyrion is using the proper one.

I've seen a pattern of low FPS on Nvidia M series here on the forums. That's laptop video right? Or maybe the combo of M series and Windows 10?

Hope you get it sorted out.

Really sad! Some time ago I got a similar hit, too. Hopefully you get up with some nice hardware soon ;-)

Have you alt tab del out of the game when it happens and looked at what processes are using the cpu when it happens ?

Might shine a light on whats going on.

You could also instal CPU-Z and gpu monitor to see what the pc is doing specifically when these frame drops happen.
