It's been a while since anyone has started a building challenge right? I think it's about time for another one. My idea here is to make a micro CV that can fit through a 13x7 hangar door, so you can land it inside the hangars of larger spaceports. Do keep in mind that because the borders are quite thick on the hangar door, you can only make your ship 11 blocks wide, and 5 blocks tall. Because this is a quite tough thing to accomplish it'll be the only requirement the ships have! If you feel like that isn't enough, you could try out the bonus challenges: - Make a proper mobile base, with a fully equipped medbay and growing plots. - Make a ship suitable for PVE combat. - Make a ship that can function as a mining/salvage vessel - Have docking ports on the ship so you can dock SV's externally. I not only recommend, but highly encourage you to make your build in the alpha 9 experimental, so you can take advantage of the cool new features we got. Do keep in mind that retracted turrets and landing gear still count for the full hitbox, even though they shouldn't. I hope you'll partake in this challenge and good luck and have fun to those who do! -T431
I've finished up my contribution, the T4-Cutter! https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1587087369 I'm really happy with how this little ship turned out, and it meets all of the bonus challenges I set if you upgrade the weapons.
My first attempt ended up just a bit too big to fit through the doors but it turned out to be a cool bug ship so I'm keeping it to finish later. Might have something else in the pipeline that will meet the challenge though. Still needs more work but it's getting there.
I normally build small, so I thought that I already had a number of builds that would fit through a 13x7 hangar door. Looks like I was wrong, even my micro miner and salvage vessel is too tall. I came to the conclusion that you cannot have roof turrets over the warp core. 2 blocks for the height of the core, 2 blocks for above and below covering it, 1 block for the landing gear. ... 5 blocks tall, W/O the roof turret My only existing build that can fit is Escort 1, which does not have a warp core. Interesting challenge, is there a limit to the length?
No, I felt the extremely strict height and width requirements would be enough. Great little CV by the way, do you have a workshop link?
Here you go. Cerulean Star - Escort 1 I am working on an expanded one that contains a warp core and the goodies you need for a mobile base.
Alien Science Vessel. It's a tight fit but it will go through a 13x7 hangar door. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1588562902 It will keep the air in but maybe not so good at keeping the nasties out. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Very nice build, it really looks like something aliens would use for researching weird anomolies and the like.
Thanks. I think I need to work on the paint and textures some more though. It needs more contrast so the details show up better.
My entry is up, I decided to call it a Shovelhead after the Shovelhead shark. It's a full mobile base, let me know if I missed anything. Just do not try to go through a hangar door with a ship docked on the roof.
My entry is the mobile base/miner "Astral Hugger mk1". The name came about because it sort of looks like the ship is trying to hug something when fixed drills are attached and extended. The hull is built from plastic blocks, giving it a dry mass of just 475 tons (with just the one ventral thruster, it can lift 3 times its own mass in cargo), but not much (any?) combat survivability. Therefore, it's only armed with sentry turrets, mostly to discourage the local wildlife and any would-be on-foot boarders. Technically, you could dock an SV to the roof of the habitat area, but flying through hangar doors with an SV attached will of course violate the warranty. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1588738681
I decided to upload a wider version as a separate build. The Osanshouo is wider and longer than it's sibling, the Shovelhead. It barely fits though a 17x3 hangar door, but I liked the internal space much better.
I've built one for this challenge Cirrus CV A9 It's about half cargo hauler and half general survival ship (better pics on workshop) Stores about 1,200,000L and 129 m/s lift acceleration Includes a small farm, all the medical gadges, constructors, food processor and various other things. Warp drive & gravity gen, 3 retractable cannon turrets, 7 sentry guns.
Wow! Pretty heavily armed, a mobile base, and still has over 1 ML storage. Very well done indeed! What's its fuel efficiency like under heavy load?
Well, lets just say there's a good reason I gave it a fuel efficiency mode heh.. testing it now in the creative world's .96g with both constructors refining ore: high thrust mode: 18min low thrust: 56min full thrust: about 12min (however it doesn't use the thrusters to hover when all the thrusters are on, I have no idea why - also if auto break is off it acts like its receiving full thrust in the direction you tap -basically free acceleration) 3-axis thrust and constructors processing: 10min Low power useage idle: 45hours I think I'm going to do a small edit to add a couple more fuel tanks after testing this (at the cost of a few containers)
A schedule / winner system doesn't seem to have been in the cards, with this being more creative-focused. At least that's my take on it. I have taken a few swings at this but I keep second-guessing design goals and ending up with fragments.
I can totally understand that. My current build is 3 different starts I mashed together and rebuilt into one You can still kind of make out the 3 parts to it. Working on smoothing things out and adding a third set of turrets making it out of combat steel too so it fitting the thrusters is a definate challenge. But that makes it fun.
I don't have any time limit set, since a micro CV can be hard to get right. I don't want to give anyone stress to complete their far from finished build to compete.
* Mostly boring RP stuff * Ladies and Gentlemen (and other sentient beings) I present to you my submission to this challenge, the Slicer patrol vessel. Designed to be operated by as little as a single pilot but usually crewed by 3 crew members and 1 fighter / shuttle pilot the state of the art Slicer offers good firepower and great mobility in a small package. Deployed in pairs to patrol systems it is well equipped to fend off pirate attacks and small crafts. Made of combat steel and armed with 10 cannon and 4 missile turrets as well as 4 fixed pulse laser emplacements you can expect this lightweight to carry a hefty punch. * Shameless workshop link * https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1604865785 *Builder commentary* This was a really tough build. I think the simple size constraints made this challenge really interesting. As always I simply cannot have a ship without a function so I imposed a specific role for this ship on top of other things. As always there is plenty of room for improvement so any commentary, good or bad is truly welcomed Cheers, Kahrek Laume
