Hello devs, any news on this? Been waiting for years....... I mean, I have a pretty low opinion of the Eleon devs due to lots of bad design decisions, so I don't really think it'll ever happen...but I'd like to hope that someday Empyrion will be able to be hosted on the better platform for hosting.
@Taien: That's the spirit: First a deregatory remark about the developers, then expecting them to change their priorities. I mean, put yourself into their shoes and ask yourself if you would help someone who had first offended you? If you insult the waitress at a diner, it probably works because she fears for her job. Here, doubt that. Anyway, back to topic: I already have a linux server for other games and like to play co-op with friends without having to deal with griefers. So public servers are no alternative for me (someone on the other old linux thread suggested this). One of those friends asked me today if E. might interest me. Yes, there is interest, but it seems I have to wait. Well, in reality I hope Empyrion makes a full release on Linux eventually, not just server. That would be the real deal ;-)
Since I am the TO here, I would also like to clarify two points. Devs changing their prios already happened. In 2015 the annoucement for dedicated linux servers was "comming soon". Yes there is no date. But common sense says today is more "very much later" than "soon". There is no other response on dropping this promise, changing prios or anything. That's bad habit. On the other hand Empyrion is still a wonderful example for an EA title. IMHO we already got a lot of features that were not promised at the beginning of this EA phase. Thanks for (most) of that. But this makes the headless dedicated linux server even more wanted by guys like me.
With the licensing cost on windows server 2016 I sure do hope they consider a linux version sooner rather than later.
I just want to put it out there. Keith is correct. A windows server is licensed by the core these days and if someone wants to run a really badass Empyrion Server, the licensing will cost more than the hardware. I have recently bought a really nice dell power edge with quad xeons (6 cores each) and 220gb of ram. You would think dropping $2,000 on a server like that would be the most significant cost, but no. To license 24 cores on that machine runs $2,200, more than the hardware cost. For now we're just running a Windows 10 VM for Empyrion but it would be nice to know that Empryion could one day take full advantage of this server and host a massive group of players.
Cant compete with such hardware, but even on my 6 Core machine with 32GB a rust-server (as mentioned above) runs fine with 50 players on an average cpu load of 1.x along with the usual other servers and many other game-servers along (so still up to 4 cores "idle") . So even if empyrion would be load-hungry... could live with that. Linux admins like me just do not want to run a Windows VM on a fully fledged linux server. Wine maybe.. but no KVM or similar. Also I would need to buy an expensive windows lincense for that. No way. A word from the devs would be lovely... this thread didn't receive any love yet.
Yep, came looking once again to host a Linux dedi, and found no progress has been made on it. @leewells2000 That's a bit steep for the PowerEdge, but that is a lot of RAM too. I snagged an R710 a while ago with 72GB RAM for about $350. I've filled the un-matched RAM slot so it's at 80GB now, and dropped 250GB 960 Evo SSD's into it. Running RAID 0 with 1TB storage it handles multiple 7 Days to Die servers with ease. Empyrion should be no issue compared to 7DTD. Seems to be the norm with developers now though. Promise a Linux dedi, and then never deliver.
Hi folks, first: Its useless to harm other players for they asking for linux-server, they were announced, and so its right to ask for them! second: As a programmer i knew how bad it is, to have hundreds of problem's to fix in code, but u have to get your focus back to get this stuff running, that u promised! Yes Empyrion, you made (at this point) a real great game, and you supporting it very well! It's awesome to see that bugfixes will run very fast, and to get answered questions in a short while! Till now well done, i love to play this game (even with the bugs), cause it makes a lot of fun and i see that you're making it better! BUT it would be nice to get a Linux-Server after more than 4 years of promising it! I own a octa-core Linux-Root (mostly idling), and it would be great to see it working again! Even in the knowledge, that a lot of problems u have with windows-server are not given in a linux-environment! And surely i wont pay for a windows-server, cause i already have an awesome linux-box! This isn't an offence or harassment, i just give u a gentle push (surely for all the server-owners out there too)! Your work is great, and you doin a sometimes painful job, i even know this, so far! With best regards, Animal
No current ETA, as I believe the devs are concentrating on getting the game in a more complete state that will make transferring to linux much easier. But @Hummel-o-War would know more
Well Server can be run through Wine and other mumbo jumbo but it takes up all the resources of the server ..... currently i was able to run on Ubuntu server but it is a lot of overhead ....... but anyway still waiting for Linux Dedicated no GUI Server .... May be it will be available next year
Been waiting for a Linux server for this for a while now. My friends and I all want to play but won't buy without a linux dedicated server to host our world. An official update, either yes or no or even yes in 2 years would be nice.
It is still on the list but our focus is windows atm. When the game is in a more finished state we will work towards Linux
Excellent, thanks for the reply We caved in and are playing local co-op but it's not ideal. Loving the game though. Your MP audience will be way bigger with a dedicated linux server
If you can handle running the server with WINE, you can try the docker image called bitr/empyrion-server (docker pull bitr/empyrion-server). Check out the reddit post at https://www.reddit.com/r/empyrionga...cker_image_for_the_empyrion_dedicated_server/ for details
Never used Docker but that might be very useful, I'll have a try at it over the weekend. Once it doesn't max out my server I'll be happy. Thanks @BitR
I saw this interesting headline... "Microsoft developer reveals Linux is now more used on Azure than Windows Server." https://www.zdnet.com/article/micro...s-now-more-used-on-azure-than-windows-server/ I'm not suggesting this is worthy of Devs realigning their priorities, just that the world has a habit of changing given enough time.
I was interested to find this after the last update... Sadly, choosing "Open Linux shell here" doesn't do much atm. Shell opens, and then closes again.
Bought the game, got delighted, bought four more copies for my family and friends but... The game lacks a linux-server. We're all REALLY looking forward for a linux-server.
I've received an official answer(please check attachment). It was received in this thread: https://empyriononline.com/threads/dedicated-server-questions-about-api.68500/
