I just lost once again half an hour of progress because EGS simply just uses a certain save instead of creating a new one and i misclicked onto an older save of the same game instead of a different one and EGS overwrites the last one. And on another note. Why is it that whenever i make a backup save it takes more and more time as the game progresses, meanwhile i am waiting 2 minutes or so until my savegame is created but whenever i exit the game it takes 3 seconds at most? Heck even the one time i crashed to desktop the game managed to save. I know my old hdd might not be optimal for this as EGS saves a game in thousands upon thousands of files but there has to be some solution. Also please let us select multiple save at once so we can delete them at once and do not have to wait a minute or so for each savegame.
The "active game" is saved at regular intervals (auto-save) to prevent data loss in case of crash. It's not perfect but better than nothing, and when leaving the game it only saves the last few seconds. The "backup" feature is the creation of a whole new file all at once so it's normal to be a bit longer since it has to copy folders, and the playfields folders can be heavy if you visited many during a session. For example, a class 5 planet has the "terrain" saved with all modifications made, and just that file can be 68 mb. I have a very average laptop and it never takes more than 1 or 2 seconds to make a backup, so maybe your operating system (Windows) is interfering here. I would highly recommend that you give a recognizable name to your savegames, and to "bulk" manage them from an external program (file explorer) because the game does a terrible job at deleting savegames (many misses, only deletes cache).
Now i'm jealous and curious. How could windows interfere with the saving process? I was assuming the sheer mass of small files everything is saved up in combination with my not multitasking capable mechanical hard drive would be the root cause. But you saying deleting is better done oog makes me think its not totally my fault.
Do you have anti-virus active, or Windows Defender? Indexing ? Are you opted-in to "Windows Marvelous User Experience General Data Mining-without-the-user-consent-and-knowledge" that plagues all facets of windows ? I make (litterally) hundreds of saves daily, making tests on playfields - I edit one digit or two, start a new game, use shortcut godmode etc and fly to the "feature" I want to check, then exit. Actually it's the "exit game" that takes the longer and fails many time (have to kill the process) and I found that it's sometimes better to simply alt-F4 from the main menu. I don't care for these "savegames" as I'm just doing checks, but when I get too many of them I delete them from the game's interface, then when I check with a file browser I can see many folders were not deleted. I have to check by date to find the proper folders, because I don't name my saves properly. But for someone playing for hours, it would be a safeguard to name the savegames (other than "savegame342) and back them up manually somewhere.
- Anti-virus, for sure. I never deactivate it. Will give it a try. - Defender should be deactivated but it wouldn't surprise me if windows reactivated it on its own. - What do you mean with indexing? - Is windows marvellous user experience the correct name so i can look it up when i'm home? It definetely would work without my knowledge.
Windows indexing service keeps track of files and folders and is always active in the background. This is just one of the many Windows "default" services that I disable to make sure there are no unnecessary processes interfering with programs. Indexing may be cool for desktop applications, but it's just an annoyance for other programs that require rapid disk access. I run a mechanical HDD too and it's still quite fast in Empyrion. If you want more information about what services Windows really requires to run smooth and what services can be "calmed down" read this link : http://www.blackviper.com/service-configurations/black-vipers-windows-10-service-configurations/ The "Windows User Experience" is a general tasks and functions pack run in the background by Windows to collect various information about PC usage. It is really intrusive, but it is controllable to some extent. The constant collect of information/ writing down of logs is unneedingly requesting system resources all the time and ironically provides a rather "worse" user experience than when it is reduced to minimum. Check the Task Scheduler to see how many "tasks" are set to run at boot, on user login, when a browser is opened, etc. These automated tasks can be disabled with no consequence on system operation, but better reading a bit on the subject before trying things blindly.
The autosaving overwrites the manual saves if you reload more than once. I had a save before I tried to mount a minigun turret to the hovercraft. It got placed wrong and I reloaded. Did not make a new savegame as I thought the old one would still be there. Tried mounting the minigun again and failed. Reloaded. Failed again but this time there was no savegame anymore, it had been overwritten by an autosave (the one created when you leave to main menu). This is unacceptable. If I make a manual save, it must be accessible more then once or twice.
