This is the moment where we unveil the fifth building type...

Ladies and Gentlemen... I present to you the... BV

Ok, thats a bit dramatic, but a BV could be a Base Vehicle, a CV seamlessly integrated into a BA so that it is in fact both, a base AND a ship

    20200818220257_2.jpg

Here is an example of a BV, the whole tower can be flown to space and will dock there with a mother ship.

    20200820192253_2.jpg

This is another example, see how well the two structures were aligned in this case. (This took some fiddling and its not perfect, but you see how good it can get)

So how do we do it? The process is a bit complicated and not really user friendly. But since I got asked...

    The secret is... Shutter Doors.

Shutter Doors have 3 attributes that are essential to use them as auto alignment "docking clamps".
    • They are EXACTLY one block in size (Blast Doors for example are not)
    • They do not interfere with the CV when open
    • They DO interfere with the CV when closed (unlike ramps, which don't)

But that is only half the solution. The other half is how to do it:
    1. You build a "hole" into your BA that is 1 or 2 blocks larger than your CV
    2. Surround the holw with shutter doors and bin them to a custom switch in the control panel (the control panel part is especially important)
    3. You land your CV in the hole.
    4. Press C and O to get it to the ground and horizontally aligned
    5. Open the registry and from the registry the control panel of the base WHILE STILL PILOTING THE CV!
    6. Flip the switch that activates the shutter doors.
    7. Watch your CV get autoaligned.
    8. Check your CV, it it does not align seamlessly, open the shutter doors again and repeat from step 4 (pressing C and O), it usually takes 2, at most 3 iterations

In priciple this also works with CV - CV docking, with the added complexity needing the carrier CV to be horizontally aligned and both CVs actually "docking" and then sticking together at the least favorable moment.

    I like it.

As for myself, I had been using sloped blocks and "block towers" for alignment. Your method produces a lot cleaner look.

So, on one hand I am like "dude...that took a lot of work...why?" and then I realized I totally salvaged every single block of Zirax POIs from a planet, taking far longer than ever even remotely needed, just "cuz".

I know that base, I would have preferred that method of alignment but I could never get it to work correctly. Probably a problem on my end. So I tried another approach which then lead to the solution presented here.

Your approach is great, sorry didn't mean to make it sound like it wasn't.

You did not. The Shutter Method isnt perfect, either. It has its drawbacks, especially user friendliness, but it works.

I probably missed what might have been causing you issues with the peg method of docking CV to BA.

Dinkelsen, I really love the idea and the outside looks for your creation.

I've stalked about as much as I could... but I cannot see any bp anywhere for this base/cv.

Did you post it? Or would you be willing to post/share it? I would like to try it in my solo survival games.

    Thanks so much!

@muggen, yes its not in the workshop and I fear it will never be.

I only release things that are working, finished and polished. This project, while aewsomely cool, was abandoned because it did not fit my playstyle. Building the concrete base everywhere I go was to cumbersome for my nomadic playstyle. Maybe if I had a more settled down playstyle it would be perfect, but so I moved on to the next (unsuccsesful) attempt to build my perfect CV.

That's a shame, it's a beautiful design. I may have to attempt to emulate it, but.. while people say they are not good at building, I for sure am not haha. It seems not toooo bad in terms of block modifications tho.

I've seen some of your other designs, and really like them.. you keep doing you, and maybe I can copy or use some of them ;)
