I have a CV I'm unable to repair because the repair console is telling me the template is too big to fit in the space, as indicated in this screenshot:

    https://i.imgur.com/bPCptl2.png

It's a blueprint I converted from a static base out of Project Eden if that matters at all.

I don't see how there isn't enough space because I've got it parked on one of my large CV landing pads which I specifically made long enough to hold this ship: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2275771001

Is the message actually trying to tell me something different or did I find a bug?

Cant see the picture - 'access denied'.

Go to repair station, get it to show area. If that area overlaps with anything else (another base or vessel), then it is likely to complain.

I generally I find that if a bit of the base overlaps the repair area, then it doesn't mind, but sometimes it seems to have a bad day - just another thing that often seems a bit buggy in this to me. I have some bases that have several blocks in the repair area (designed for odd shaped CVs) and it seems OK with that with those bases, and yet other more generic bases have had endless issues for no obvious reason.

In my experience, if anything else is within the repair error it won't work. That means other vehicles, part of other vehicles, characters, any part of the base, etc.

Another issue I've encountered although I can't remember if it was station services or the repair bay is that in order to move the damaged ship I added a thruster or other component in a spot that blocked restoring the original design. It had to be removed first.

You might also try taking your ship to the Station Services and repair it there. The outcome is the same, but they seem to be to act a bit differently enough to try it if the repair continues to fail.

I took the Project Eden ship, and the CV Pad into a creative session to see what's what. This isn't specifically a problem with this particular ship. When it continued to fail there, I grabbed a copy of Spanj's Superlifter-B and spawned it onto the pad. It produces the same result.

Apparently for both of the large ships the yellow repair box you get when you click on "Show Repair Area" extends below the main platform and is intersecting with the support columns beneath it and it doesn't like that. Smaller ships I spawned in will allow the repair to be processed, so it's clearly got something to do with how large of a ship you're attempting to repair because the larger the ship, the larger that yellow box gets, and it appears that once the ship is big enough it won't allow you to repair it without doing something super silly like putting a repair pad out on open ground and doing it there.

Yes, I can take it to Station Services at some orbital place, and I suspect I could just build a space based platform to do this, but the whole reason I wanted it on the ground near my base is because it's safer to park the thing there and fix it within range of the main base to defend against pesky Zirax drones.

Odd. I've had no trouble repairing Spanj's Superlifters. Is the pad big enough to fully hold the ship with at least 1 block clearance?

Also, Land-based Trade Stations have the same services.

If you mean one block clearance off the back end of the pad, yes, his Superlifter-B fits well within those restrictions, and I even threw on a bunch of extra blocks at the end to be sure, and it still throws that error.

The only commonality his ship has with the one I was actually trying to repair is that the yellow box from "Show Repair Area" extends below the platform and intersects the support columns for both ships. Any other ship I put on there where the box doesn't extend below the platform is able to be repaired without issue.

Just to clear it from possibilities, are you sure any boarding ramps and/or regular ramps don't "sink" into the ground? I had to use a 1x6x4 boarding ramp to get everything to fit. It worked fine in-game, no issues. But I finally realized it was the culprit that was causing the same issue you're having. The bottom tier of blocks on the boarding ramp extends below ground level. But when the ramp is up/closed, the full area it's taking up is not seen - like a half block's other side - and, visually speaking, it looks like it's well within repair bounds (fact is, it looks it sits a whole block above ground.) Again, no problem in-game, but it will cause havoc with the repair station.

Yep, that was it. The stupid boarding ramp on the New Horizons ship cuts into the tarmac when open. After I removed it, the repair can proceed.

The Superlifter-B has the same issue, but with a standard ramp at the bottom. It also cuts into the tarmac when extended and was preventing that from being repaired as well.

I guess now I'll just have to see about changing the boarding ramp out for one that doesn't do that.

I think this is just intermittently unreliable - ie buggy.

I have had ships that will not repair despite clearance and yet mostly I dont have problems with parts of the base encroaching on the repair volume, for eg, see this for a more extreme case that works:

    The whole repair area:
    20201108140803_1.jpg
The truss blocks and elevator, basic windows etc are all part of the base (vessel's landing gear and exit ramp is actually at the top of the elevator) and as you can see they are significantly encroaching. There is also an encroaching truss column at the rear along with solar cells which again is part of the base. As you can see - it is repairing just fine.
    20201108140908_1.jpg

Under thew vessel at its lowest point is where the repair bay and console are. When standing at the console, I am outside the repair area which I think is the significant factor. I notice if my avatar enters the repair zone, it shuts off until I exit the zone.
    20201108140951_1.jpg

There are the repair facility and ship separated for reference. (Despite appearances - it is easy to land this thing on its repair facility - frame and some LCD projectors serve as guides).

Another example that didn't work this time:

Context: a CV sat on the apron/runway on a military style base. I have checked that none of the other SVs/HVs are encroaching. It will not repair it, says it is blocked.
    20201108152100_1.jpg

Two areas of encroachment;: truss frame at front and a gangway (door + force-field corridor) at side.
    20201108151918_1.jpg 20201108151921_1.jpg

I deleted the block of the door and force field. No difference, so had to be the front. So I restore the gangway, and delete a bit of the truss and LCD projectors - that works.
    20201108153118_1.jpg

The gangway and force-field blocks still encroach.

Intermittently it was also saying 'no backup'.

This system really needs fixing to at least completely ignore blocks on the structure to which the repair bay is attached unless there is an actual block level collision. For a start it need to be fixed to at least be consistent. Something is evidently buggy in this but I guess I shouldnt be surprised - it seem so much in this feels badly rushed and over-simplistically implemented. Release ready 1.0? Definitely not!

I just wanted to throw in one last followup. The original ship design had a 3x4x6 boarding ramp on the front. That clipped through the tarmac. I've since changed it out for a smaller 3x2x3 one which is level with the tarmac. The problem is now solved.

To be fair, in this particular instance, the ship was never meant to be taken over as a usable CV since it was a static space based POI so the configuration never had to take this into account. It's something to keep in mind though when making a ship landable that has something like this.

I had been having the same problem, (appearing as intermittent) But I MAY have a theory why it works (sometimes)

I only have tried this on one CV ship, but it has both retractable underside weapons and a long retractable ramp.

The motion sensor goes off when you get close to drop all these items down. *BUT* If I *NEVER* get close to the ship for this to happen after a fresh complete game (not just the save) load. it WORKS. And reliably so.

It's like the game "remembers" the block was dropped (theoretically) down 1/2 block into the (outdoor) concrete base landing pad the ship is sitting on in my case, and it wont do the repair. But if I start the game fresh and go right to the repair console without ever triggering those blocks on the ship. It works. Again, just a theory, but that's what worked in my case. I did not have to modify the design.

The same thing can happen if you have drills or mounted weapons that stick out past the front. If you've never deployed them, you can land closer to the edge. If you do, even once, the game remembers how far they extend even if you land with them retracted. Which then forces you to move the ship back until it fits the space again. Annoying, yes, but far less of an issue than clipping ramps.
