Welcome to the forum mate. My preference was to build a ship in creative and then make a blueprint and then test it out in a normal world. Spanj and Jeff Randall are a couple of people I like to watch do builds. Get some good ideas from them.
There are some great tutorial videos on YouTube showing how blocks fit together. That one's handy too but it's pretty old. The one I'm referring to was built up a wall with all the new block types.
