Does technique change yield when mining?

I've mined a lot by hand and every time I do I wonder if technique changes the yielded ore, or is it "set" by the deposit.

ie: This deposit has 200 copper, so when tapped out that's the yield.

Are asteroids any different, or same rules?

    Thx!

I have tried different methods and haven't seen any differences in yield. I do believe that there is some randomness with ore yields meaning that a small deposit might yield between 200-300 ore. I do not think it is a hard number per deposit.

Yeah, pretty much jibes with what I was observing, I'm hoping someone had a definitive answer. Not a big deal, just a question that pops up in my head every time I grab my drill ...

    Thanks for the answer!

Yield is solely based on total voxels mined. There are no tactics or better gear that will yield better results.

Oh, so the survival tool mines the same amount as the higher tier drill? I have been always trying to not mine "too much" at the start with the survival tool as I feared it might give a worse yield from the finite deposits but if there's no difference then I'm going to just empty them as I go. You sure about this?

Yes, it was recently discussed in discord as well, photo attached.

Ah HA! I always worried that I might be missing ore if I "mined it wrong", eg: Nibble the edges in to get it all, drill down the center and spin while going up, etc.

Just my mild (AHEM) OCD rearing it's ugly head ... LOL

So, ore is ore. period. Got it. Thx to all

    But WAIT, there's MORE! :p

What about meteorites? I've only tackled a couple and found them frustrating. With a single Drill turret on my HV it gets like 1 ore per 5-10 seconds and you have to keep moving around randomly or it just drills with no result, sometimes (OOOH!!) getting three or even FOUR whole ores for your 10 seconds of mindless drilling. MY HANDHELD Epic IS FASTER!!

Am I missing something or do you have to have a monster HV Drill machine for them?
EDIT: We should be able to blow them up into chunks then pickup the chunks... Just sayin'

    Love,
    Frustrated in Space :D

You want the turret tool for the CV. When you place it, right click to get the multi tool or drill option. That drill will eat an entire asteroid in less than one minute. It’s super OP compared to any other option out there.

I was interested in this, if the better drills would give out more ores, so I did a test. This was on 1.3.4 3212

    World Seed: 578576 Jstel.
Drilled Iron deposit at approx coords -433/267
I did 3 tests for each as I found out the quantity is not always the same.

    Survival tool.

Looks like it doesn't matter what tool you use. You don't get more out with better tools.

Thanks Spoon! I was wondering about the does it matter the MANNER in which you drill, but this is totally related, and very nice to know. I'm kinda surprised at the result too. Guess it's only a bit of speed for the better tools.

    Hey Movado, thanks for this.

I'm still driving around my little upgraded Dart, LOL. Fond of the little thing ya know. One day I'll spawn a "real" SV I guess.

But I did put a Laser miner on it (only one) and found it drilled a tiny area and was very slow, so I abandoned that approach. Does having multiple Lasers make that much difference? I read some threads where people were going with mechanicals as the default instead of Laser ...

I can’t offer much guidance on the SV/HV stuff. I actually never use them as I tend to go straight from handheld Drill to CV drill, which unlocks at level 20. I usually power level from ~10 to 20 so I can get the good stuff unlocked quickly.

To power level, once you get an SV, just fly around and kill stuff. You’ll level quickly doing that.

I’m sure others have a different play style and know those better. But, adding more does help. Each one acts independently from the others. I’d recommend spacing them out a bit though, and not having them side by side.

It's extra info. My test was due to what @Pembroke said in post #5

Yeah, I level up fast too, I'm at max and out in space. When starting I usually run around in a HV with a Harvester to level up fast, then throw the logs into a BUNCH of portable constructors to make Bio Fuel for power in the early game. Works a treat as the Brits say. If I want to buddy up to the Zirax scum I'll do it in their territory, builds rep fast and you get lots of fuel ... That, and killing Turrerapods or whatever. Meat, Milk, AND points, LOL

    I tried putting a turret on my CV to mine a gold meteorite on this cool all metal planet and got told by the AI you can only use it it space. {Sigh}

Guess I'll do a SAVE and go to Creative for a while, spawn some SV miners and try them out until I find one I like, then go back to my save and buy it for real in the Factory (I try not to 'cheat'. I don't mind doing 'research' in Creative to learn gameplay, but only do it rarely).

The Hellbat X20, I think it’s called, was my favorite SV miner. It’s in the workshop. I really like that one. But if you’re over 20, get a really basic CV and put a drill on it. Will save you loads of time.

Each voxel you destroy has a 20% chance of dropping like 2-4 ores. I might have the numbers slightly off but that is what they are set to in the config.

Correct. Most of them are either 1-3 or 2-4.

I'll also note that there is no multiplier for how much ore a tool will return. The only values that really change between them are damage and range.

Hellbat - Sounds familiar I seem to recall I subscribed to it already, I'll have to try it. Small CV - Interesting thought, but it won't mine on planets.

One of my fav "outside the box" vehicles was someone(s) made a tiny SV for running around POI's, long and skinny enough to fit in hallways. People have the strangest ideas sometimes! +100 points for creative thinking tho'.
