Trying to set up server and am wondering about maximum playfields so that I can have the maximum number of planets and solar systemds. Any and all help is, as usual, extremely appreciated!
We are currently running the Project Eden scenario on a dedicated server (GPortal) There seems to be an infinite number of playfields. As you warp to another sector they get created. Should be the same in the core game too, though I am no expert)
It depends on the scenario you are using. The default game uses a galaxy with over 10,000 star systems, each with potentially dozens of playfields.
What matters is how many are active or loaded. Not how many it has in total that really means nothing at all. And how many active or running playfields can be handled is a good question that Im not sure if that has been tested to that level by anyone. But that literally depends on two things, how many a PC can run, how much PC horse power so to speak and how much can the Unity engine handle at once. Has anyone even tried to load up 200 playfields at once ? You could force it through the yaml system to do it, but has anyone ever tried and not had the PC crash ? It really boils down to that, your servers Spec and Unity's capabilities. And I dont know of anyone who has tested that to that degree. The other thing thats a variable with this is, even though you load up playfields, it doesnt really give you a great feel for its performance still, unless you can get 4 people into EVERY playfield you load, to get some sort of load happening in each playfield to really test what its capable of. I have to admit, it would be fascinating to run these tests, but unfortunately my PC stuff is a little dated at the moment, I update every 5 years and have been putting it off for 2 years now because the gains are not that great for gaming, but PCs have still come a fair way from 2015 and it sure would be fun to test this stuff on new equipment and one day, when I finally bite that bullet again and update everything, it will be tested !
