Had this thought today. I'm a huge huge scifi fan, and love games like Empyrion. But I also have a lot of friends who are DnD types, they like fantasy. They love the premise of Empyrion in terms of the environments, gameplay, building, combat, POI and community content. But they do not care for scifi like I do. Would be interesting to see a game basically like Empyrion(no, Craftopia, Rust and the viking game are not the answer, like, literally like Empyrion) but medieval high fantasy. It would have immense potential, obviously because there would be no ships or space travel there would be differences in what you build, the things you do and how you get from world to world. But just a thought I had. Does anybody else have such an interest?
How about we talk about this topic once EGS is in its "released" state which i estimate somewhere between 4 and 7 years.
You mean Valheim? It's exactly like Empyrion with fantasy, so I don't know why you think it's not good enough. Maybe you want something more Tolkien-esque? There's Medieval Dynasty, but it's just medieval without fantasy and magic. Astral Terra is an actual fantasy one. However it has mostly negative reviews on Steam. And then I think there was another fantasy one but it also had horrible reviews. I just can't remember the name. As a matter of fact, most fantasy sandbox games don't really do well to begin with. Since most that I do see; exist, get bad reviews, and then get pulled off of Steam never to see the light of day.
Valheim is the closest but I cannot stand the Viking Aesthetic or more Norse styles of fantasy outside Skyrim. This is not offense to those wonderful cultures. But I'm more about my greystone castles and longswords. Plus I don't enjoy playing buff gruff men in games, personal preference, I find it unrelatable. Again no insult to people who like those things. I don't like my fantasy too dark or grim which most Germanic story telling is.
What you're looking for then will be modded Minecraft in about a year or more. There are already a few good RPG style mods and with the new stuff coming out with 1.17 i hope this will be the next main version a lot of mods will be based on, imo it does present itself as a good opportunity for this.
Well Minecraft already has good fantasy mods if you play on versions 1.12.2, 1.7.10, or 1.6.4. Minefantasy, Astralsorcery, Ice and Fire, Ars Magica, Blood Magic, Witchery, Bewitched, Wizardblob's Wizardry, Vampirism, and Howling Moon to name a few. But I'm not sure if you or your friends are into the whole blocky aesthetic, so maybe not.
