Although we did not yet present them in a dev blog, version 1.5 will come with a first iteration of new weapon models. While the programmers work on the code, the artists are working on a global 'style guide' for empyrion to end that mix and match of models, assets and alike for weapons, items and devices. For 1.5 we started with the weapon models for the Pistol, Shotgun and Assault Rifle. More to follow. Let us know what you think of the new style direction. As we wait for the Experimental version to be released a little teaser right away:
Very very cool, i would make the magazine of the shotgun a bit different to avoid confusion, cause the shotgun and assault rifle are very similar. What about the reload animations?
There needs to be some kind of 90 deg. grip for the player model's left hand to "hold" something for that "Hold Type", so here instead of a grip they put the ammo clip...
"Refactoring the code", like they mentioned in their recent "roadmap" blog, implies that changes they are making are not apparent, but they have part of the team also working on other aspects like scenario/ faction integration, POI additions, AI fiddling (script-based), etc, so we don't get a code-only update with nothing to show us but technical babble. In the recent blog they mentioned that next big update would address Playfield/ planet creation, which means they are trying to fix the old Solar System Generator which was used in V 8 and above, but that was not made to work with the random galaxy (did not exist at that point). The SSG was also used to make "sector maps" but now we have to use a 3rd party program for this, or make sectors.yaml by hand, until they fix the SSG. As for "walk on moving ship" this also requires they find a workaround for the limits imposed by Unity regarding colliders in motion.
I am excited about getting new weapon models, but the assault rifle especially should have a buttstock. If I'm being honest I don't like these models for that reason.
100% agreed, those shotgun and assault rifle models look way too similar. Even with different colors they would still look too similar, IMO. I feel like the only way I would ever be able to tell them apart is to mouse over and read text. Every. Single. Time....
Yep, and they directly asked what we think of them. I believe that's exactly what I did, no? Besides, the text above seemingly indicates that the rest of the weapons are W.I.P, but these ones shown are the new style they are going with. If players can't tell them apart, to me, that indicates they need to rethink the whole style.... Again, just my feedback. I do like them, I just want more discerning details.
Okay. Finally registered on here to reply to this. The pistol looks pretty cool. Kind of a cross between an SR22 and something else that I can't put my finger on. I like it. For the other two, I think the old models are better. I am kind of a gun nut so when I look at them from a practicality standpoint, I cringe when I think about shooting a rifle without a stock. Essentially, it is a really big pistol that is damn near impossible to aim/fire effectively. Before pistol braces came out, in the states we had people building these awful looking AR pistols to get around the NFA laws for short barreled rifles. That is what these remind me of. Unless you are into guns, you probably wouldn't think about something like that but coming from someone who shoots a lot, I would have a really hard time firing those weapons with any degree of accuracy. Even on a shotgun, no stock is fine for "spray and pray," not for shooting accurately. Super nitpicky commentary: I would also have the magazine on the rifle sitting just a little further forward and the ejection port further back. If that is supposed to be an ejection port on the top, the magazine should be feeding almost directly underneath it. Most rifles also have the ejection port on the side to keep casings from flying through the shooter's line of sight... but I doubt anyone but me would notice that.
I feel like this weapon modelling is honestly done in the most laziest way possible to be frank. You did a good job with making a more or less unique pistol model, and then subsequently gave up on the Shotgun, and put even less effort into the Assault Rifle. I can tell the model for all three weapons have the same grip/trigger, and the color/texture mapping looks really bad (does this mean we can color weapons at some future point?). Things I would fix on this regarding the models: Pistol: Fine as it is, however I would look at making it appear modular in shape (potential for T2 building), or, if this is truly meant to be the "primitive" pistol weapon, make it look more cookie cutter/basic. See pictures for references on a fabricated pistol: The idea is if we're making these in portable constructors, they do need to look like the most basic weapon. Shotgun: For this, we really need to look towards what your ideal for a shotgun should be? From what I've seen so far, you have wanted to go in the direction of a pump shotgun, yet your new model looks more like a combat shotgun (maybe more appropriate considering the UCH is a military organization). I provide 2 references for either or, but know that these are technically different subclasses of weapon, and you should consider what you want the weapon to be inspired by, and go with that. Assault Rifle: Others have said, I will echo it; it really needs a stock or something that looks like it could manage recoil from the fire of the weapon. I get it's supposed to be basic (and probably inaccurate?), however the lack of recoil management looks bad imo. Other things to consider is how the magazine should look. It's fine as it is, but is this going to also be the same for T2? I would also look at adding a more unique grip for this, given the recoil of the weapon is more intense than the other two I would think.
I'm OK with the shotgun, anyway there's no "pump" animation (yet), so it could be a future version of the SPAS-12 : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franchi_SPAS-12 I agree the models could have bigger differences though (we can't see the buttstock anyway when holding weapons) because just looking at them in game it's not obvious which is what, apart from the text info in bottom right corner:
The pistol is fine. What are the other 2 pistols suppose to represent? Where is the shotgun model? Where is the assault rifle model?
Shotgun shoots big pack of pellets in a cartridge, has few in magazine (5). It has a big muzzle. Rifle shoots smaller projectile at greater speed, has many in magazine (20). It has a small muzzle. You can now see by yourself.
The shotgun and rifle being identical is just pure laziness. I also don't like the bright white. Overall I don't like them.
They're not identical. You know nothing about lazyness until you stick your nose in Eleon's office. Bright white is temporary, because obviously there will be different skins for different tiers. Why should they spend hours making 3 skins for each gun if no one likes them ?
You just have no clue how your comment may be offensive for the guy who may just be following orders. How do you know if the modeler did not make a dozen different models before being told these ones were chosen ?
Newsflash. I don't give a fuck. I don't give a fuck what a no-life forum dweller thinks either. This is my feedback to the devs. They can ignore it or act on it as they like, the same as any other feedback I leave but your "feels" are your problem. Have the last word if you like, I'm sure you will with that post count. This is the last I'm gonna say about it.
Well you do give a fuck else you would not reply so quickly with a butthurt tone. Not having a clue about real world jobs is your problem, no need to make proud display of it. "Hey I don't care if they don't read my feedback" Posts anyways. Genius.
