So, I'm currently playing on v1.4.7. I have been trying some asteroid mining in an SV. Is this something you're not supposed to be doing? I have lost 4 SVs this way so far in this game. The Zirax and other red enemy ships are really aggressive in local space. I have been killed by the Zirax Dreadnaught twice, once in the starter system.

Take today, I added four laser drills to my SV and jumped to the system with the Sathium asteroid. I found the asteroid and mined a little. I got the message that I forgot the harvesting box. Now, at this time the radar was clear I believe. I got out to add the harvest box and in that amount of time, an enemy CV snuck up and blasted me. So, I'm wondering are you supposed to use a CV to mine asteroids? What is the trigger for the enemies to find you in space? Do they instantly know when you mine something and try to kill you after that? Should you kill the enemies in the space before attempting to mine the asteroid or will they just respawn?

They tend to patrol near the resources. Stick a turret or two on the SV, and you won't be surprised as quickly.
Originally you just jumped out and did it manually. Then they added the turret for the CV. Now SV's have drills and a mini turret as well.

Also, just always pay attention to your surroundings.
