Doing a Quest object -POI- without doing the Quest always leads to problems solving it. I don't think you will be able to pick up the Trail again. Maybe @Hummel-o-War knows a way.
As I had already been through the derelect ship someone recommended I force complete the objective in the F1 menu to prgoress that way, it worked a treat!
Please bear with me labling this as "not a bug". As Germanicus said, there is nothing we can currently do to avoid a situation like this.
