In the Robinson Protocol in the part where it teaches you how to build a base, IDA advises you to add an interior turret as a defense and then you get a base attack.

Not sure if you did this deliberately or not but this actually works! If the player follows the advise he is, of course, being set up to lose that first base attack. Which is an excellent way to show the importance of a good defense. It also ties very neatly to the story line as it builds on the initial enmity and conflict between the protagonist and the Zirax.

So, for goodness sake, do not "fix" this part! There is nothing broken here. The tutorial is not wrong and this part works great.

However, what you *should* do is integrate it into the story line better. You can do this with a very minor change: simply add the appropriate dialogue between IDA and the player where they both realize that their initial defense setup was inadequate. IDA could then even list improvement suggestions as to what would be enough to defend against a proper base attack (you probably need to adjust the text for the different difficulty settings).

Doing it this way turns it into the classic story telling gimmick where the protagonist loses badly the initial encounter with the antagonist only to learn from it and bounce back to a triumph later. Mayby you did the setup on purpose or maybe it was just an accident, doesn't matter. You got a gold nugget here. Do not throw it away. Build on it!

And you could do it with very little effort, too! Just add the dialogue and tie it to the campaign story.

The reason I'm pointing this out is that I have come across quite a many posts in the Steam forums where new players have complained about this part of the tutorial and how it misleads them. Which is quite understandable because the tutorial does not offer any explanations. Repeat: the tutorial is not the thing that is "wrong" here. The defect is that missing "explanation" which you can very neatly provide in the form of adding dialogue that ties it to the campaign story.

Please, keep that "your first base attack is a disaster" idea! It's good!

My only and continuing gripe with the dialog is that it changes or closes before i can finish reading. I'm sorry, but I can't read as fast asI once could. If the dialogue could stay until I indicate that I've read it (which it does at first) would make the game playable for me. This goes for any of the scenarios that have text dialogue or even warning notifications.

I don't really expect much here as I may be alone or in an extreme minority. Just thought this was a suitable place to mention it again.:)

    You're not alone. :D
Sadly the PDA pop-up messages still require a timer, but dialog doesn't need to Auto advance. Those features were added before some of the current dialog was written however so they might need to be updated if they haven't been already.

Definitely not alone in that problem. Some of the dialogs remain until you click a button. That should be the standard with all the dialogs. Or, if that would annoy other people then simply make it a game preference setting.

Thanks. I needed to hear that. I love this game, but for now, I'm skipping the storyline and just wreak havoc on everything no matter what faction. Blow it up and I won't have to read about it.;)

It's not as "clear cut" as it may seem. I'm not a slow reader, and I still miss on some parts, either because I'm drowsing and my finger falls on the LMB which advances the text, or because I'm not sure I quite understand what I read. Remember this is a story made by German guys translated in English, and I'm a French player.

But it's not a problem : we have the PDA log. Players have been asking a lot to make the text go by faster, one example that comes to mind is for players on hard starts who would freeze to death during the time it takes to read the instructions on "how not to freeze to death". Funny.

I liked the Mass Effect system, where lots of information could be found in the Codex on all subjects, and parts were added to it along with each new discovery and encounter - instead of throwing it all to players at the very start, which may appear like a daunting task, it could help players start reading a bit about the lore and tricks.
