I saw someone on Discord ask if crouching has any "game play effects" like better weapon stability or increased stealth. The other one I wanted to ask is if it actually changes the character hit box, and I still don't know for sure if it does. I believe it was @Taelyn who responded "Nope, just crouching for now." But I think that is selling it short! Crouching is awesome if only for one simple reason: it changes the position of the character 1PV camera. It is now possible to foil those diabolical Zirax sentry guns that some maniac Zirax architect(s) insist on placing IMMEDIATELY above doorways (including in the entrance to the Temple in their Xenu Fortress). The Challenge? Take out 100 traps/sentry guns using crouch Crouching saves lives; crouching IS LIFE. Live long and crouch often.
Crouching is awesome - super helpful when painting a newly constructed ship or getting those hard-to-reach places around devices. It's also super helpful when facing down Zirax ground forces, especially those coming up a hill.
So what? Does it something else currently (1.7.3) apart going under obstacles, or does it not? I'm not sure that you are answering this question when you both say above: It's awesome. Awesome is good, exact info is better. There is a confusing debate on Steam about it right now: https://steamcommunity.com/app/383120/discussions/0/3185736218667205098/
Look at @Foofaspoon 's post (#10) on that thread you point to. If crouching did not reduce/ lower the player character's collider, the player would not be able to pass in a low space he can't access when he's standing. Obviously, the collider is lowered when crouching, and it allows peek-a-boo shooting tactics behind cover. We don't have any "stealth" benefits for now, but I'm sure they could work out something regarding enemy AI detection range/ accuracy (weapon spread) , delays before changing from "unaware" to "aware" etc. They could also try to link damage received by NPCs by their awareness state and show a brief message like "x2 bonus for sneak attack", even when the player is standing but the AI did not detect him yet (ex. when sniping at long range). It's a shame that such a change like "crouching" comes in so late in development, when hundreds of POIs have already been built. Had "crouching" and some "stealth" functions been made earlier, then many POIs could have incorporated vents, laser barriers to be passed under, crates the player can crouch behind to walk undetected by guards, etc. Now we also need weapon silencers and new "muffled" sound effects tied to them...
I would be happy if crouching multiplied weapon recoil by zero, or something close to it. Might make the minigun worthwhile.
