So I have returned recently to do another playthrough (after a long break), and I'm kinda annoyed that there hasn't been any change to speed in space (unless i'm missing something). Is it really necessary to spend 10 minutes going between each asteriod/poi in space? Is there a MOD or anything that can improve it? Wish there was an "impulse"-like engine (like star trek) that could traverse distances of 5-10km (like a hyperdrive), but I'll settle for a mod or setting than can reduce the downtime.
speeds are hard capped afaik. you can use a SV instead of a CV to map out all your space poi. SV is a lot faster than a CV and you can use boost intermittently to speed things up or escape a bad situation.
In an SP game you can do this via the teleport console command ... it's your model railroad; you can pick up the train and move it wherever you want to 8^) in the /Saves directory update adminconfig.yaml to give yourself an elevated role that can teleport (it's your server- permission 9 is admin, .. you can find your steamid as a folder name in any saved game under /Players) open the map via m and right click on the target ... note the coordinates x, y, z open console via ~ and enter the command "teleport x,y,z-1000" to appear 1km away ... if you don't do the +/- part you will appear inside the target
It is only necessary to spend ten minutes traveling between objects if you insist on two that are sixty kilometers apart.
Thanks for the suggestions. Admittedly my starter CV is a little on the slow side until it gets upgraded, but 25 minutes of travel on the root beer quest in the back and forth from hidden base and distillery is damn steep. It's just a shame you can't fiddle with settings in single player.. really doubt it would cause issues with the engine to double speeds in a single player environment. I saw mention of "cheat engine" that could speed up time, but not gonna touch sketchy software like that. Some kind of short jump feature would also be nice, but I guess none of that is happening, so I'll have to live with it Just seems weird to me that you would expand the playfield from a single solar system to a gigantic galaxy, but not provide more means of fast travel.
It's not a Newtonian sort of thing- movement speed is capped for mechanical reasons that reflect the limitations of the game's framework and a desire to create an MP experience that's visually equivalent to the SP one across a wide range of machines. Moore's law helps, but the shared buses between components and limits imposed by exclusive/shared access to critical data limits throughput as well. While a dev could give you reasonable reasons why specific choices were made, to do so invites endless debate- why jump in a tar pit?
I think I'd find it annoying if CVs could warp to destinations instantly around a space playfield, particularly orbital patrol CVs.
Ditto. Under the hood calling a setter for IEntity.Position lets you do the move (client call in SP, playfield server for MP) but if NPCs could (or couldn't) do it then it would be really disruptive. If targeted teleport was an official part of play, I'd want it balanced with unintended consequences & limits ... a few "there's a good reason people don't do it, but you can choose to" sorts of things can be fun and would explain why the Zirax commander doesn't send their PVs flitting around or only does so when they *really* hate you. Getting going in the right direction with the I key turned off and wandering around my computer doing IRL stuff is how I cope with the long A-to-B stuff. 8)
