Hey all, As I only very rarely use Blueprints and build stuff from scratch in Survival, my builds are often quite organic and depend largely on what I can salvage. So, loot I find or a POI I discover and salvage will directly shape how I build. I often find myself doing quite compact CV builds during the early-game, then evolving that build over time. As such, I sometimes have things in bit close a proximity to radiation and heat. Sure, I can move the offending "hot" block and perhaps place it elsewhere, but that's not always straight-forward. What I'd LOVE to see is a block, that actively BLOCKS radiation and heat. So, I can do compact builds and route corridors right by any "hot" blocks. Now, sure, I can just dash past a hot block and shower. Easy. But that's really not the point. I'd love to be able to build a safe corridor past such things. I wonder if the current game mechanic could possible support this? I.e. hot devices like thrusters and generators produce a lot of rads and heat. This radiates out to a pre-defined distance around the device, irrespective of any blocks in between. Having a new block type that could block this would be quite welcome. Do others find themselves in situations like this, where they'd like to be able to block the radiation from a specific device?
Considering the hazard only extends out one block, having a special block that obstructs it seems very redundant. Anything that keeps you out of that space provides all the protection you need. Even a sticking a warp drive and generators on the roof of a four-block-tall engine room is plenty of protection. I'll do the same with gravity generators, but I'm also happy to stick them behind CPU extenders and greebles. Thrusters I usually put in void spaces between the inner and outer hull or in external parastructures, like nacelles. If it really comes down to it, hazardous parts can just be put in an inaccessible room. It's really not a big deal to make compact ships. You just need to understand what parts you actually need and where they can fit safely.
Yup, I've made a few small ships where standing next to the pilot seat is indeed next to a thruster, if I could 'wall' block it off it would be good, still room to move by but no nasty rashes to use up 'there there' cream, though I occasionally cheat in these circumstances as there's very little space left I have a Dining table that breaks down into a Shower or a Bed when needed... sorry Eleon, but in real life I could have the shower and sit on the bed to rest or eat in the space of a single block (think caravan) I guess the rad-proof block could be made of something you'd rather keep like Zasc alloy, though perhaps a window... after all I can't remember ever getting heatstroke, sunburn or radiated when standing against a window near the sun.
It's not a big deal, no. However, I often find myself wanting to block radiation/heat in certain areas just because. It would give me more options for building. I'd like to see a corridor-style block that allows this, so I can be directly adjacent to something hot. A design can be much neater and more aesthetically pleasing as a result. The good thing about additions like this is that if they are of no interest to you, they in no way limit your gameplay. @Peter Conway - Yeah, it'd be nice for compact builds or, like me, very early-game builds where you're cramming stuff together. I'd suggest such a block, if it ever happened, not require exotic materials to craft as I'd want to use it early-game more than anything. Just more regular materials and be heavier as a result. It's just for me to traverse areas and not get hot or irradiated as a result. Also, if such a block were implemented, we could have devices that are super hot or radioactive where you'd want to contain them. Heh, imagine a radiation emitter block, you shield it your side, but it melts anyone who approaches it wrong. A nice POI trap items potentially. Go through the obvious opening, or spot the hidden, shielded way past.
