No, this was a Space Drone (laser). I'd launched in the SV to take it out, but the dogfight moved back towards the ship and the drone attacked the Star while I was trying to close back in. It's possible the drone just had more time to shoot that I'd thought (and it was coming from above the turret, so there was no fire from the ship), but I've taken more damage from space drones since the Alpha, so I dunno - could be luck or simply mistakes on my part.

OTOH, I did notice when taking Thermica Station apart that the blocks which used to be Interior Blocks only took two R&R hits to remove, whereas the "hull blocks" took four.

I *did* encounter some of the new big drones on Masperon, though. Two of them (Large Minigun Drone, I think they were) attacked the Star while she was grounded next to a zascosium deposit. They took the turret out (the ship is now on turret #3 ....), luckily I'd popped out of the hole to see what the firing was and managed to destroy 'em. Those things are tough - and one more reason for the next CV design to pack more than a single turret.

Yeah, one Turret really isn't enough. I'd try at least 4. ;) (My former Tyrax Starter CV had 5 Cannon Turrets.)

For the Topic: Got my first Post-Alpha SV built intended for my use on the Red vs Blue Server, but i'm disappointed in it & am hiding it away in shame & embarrassment. I'm gonna have to try again at making one.

Well, the Star-class isn't terribly large (13 x 24 x 9) and I didn't have any decent spots to put additional turrets. Plus, the previous ships of the class (Wandering Star and Star of Akua) never really had trouble with drones, especially once they'd landed. *Those* were just free parts if I felt they were close enough to stop mining long enough to grab 'em :)

    http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=635373044

But yeah, I'm think 2+ miniguns, maybe a cannon or two, plus something heavier for those new big drones - they probably just tanked the minigun shots 'til they got close enough to wreck the turret on on the Unknown Star. Any suggestions for heavy turrets? I'm just used to minigun and cannon (plus flak, but those don't go on CVs).

I've never been dissatisfied with the Cannon Turrets, but i've heard others say they fire too slow thus making them poor in DPS. The new Large Drones look to me like pretty big targets, so perhaps the Rocket Launcher Turrets would have an easy time hitting them & banging them up good. :)

(Edit: Corrected stupid error in Post.)

Regarding CV turrets, I put a load of Plasma Turrets on my most recent CV warship design, and they seem to work quite decently. The projectiles themselves are somewhat slow, but they deal a decent punch when they connect. I've taken out Space Drones in the first barrage... but I've also had 10-minute dogfights with Space Drones due to the projectile missing nearly every time. Like swatting a fly with a baseball bat. Sure, if you connect, it'll be a devastating hit, but good luck connecting in the first place :p

My advice: a couple Plasma Cannons for the long-distance stuff, then a few Cannon turrets for when they get close in. The Plasma will either force them to come closer or be wrecked, and I imagine the Cannon turrets have a quicker swivel-speed and likely fire hit-scan bullets, therefore disregarding projectile travel time, making them ideal for dealing with short-range hostiles.

Anyway on topic: yesterday I did some PvP on the RvB server and learned some valuable lessons about PvP in the current state. As I had feared, ground-based battle involving a lot of players still causes terrain issues, mostly involving falling through terrain and getting stuck. :( It may be a while before full-scale ground assault is attempted again (at least in PvP... "re-activating" Alien POIs seems to work fine in my (so far limited) experience, as a PvE battle for players)

Built a new CV, purposely as small as possible. Despite being 14 x 24 x 8 in size, it has a warp drive and six planet-capable turrets.

I call it the Gremlin Corvette.

BTW: Atmo thrusters are da bomba!

Pretty decently so. Got 2 T2 RCS in there (almost certainly overkill) and decent amount of thrust in all directions. Didn't go too crazy with thrusters as I wanted it to still be fuel efficient tho. But from tests so far, it's quite capable of it's intended task: destroying planet-bound bases :)

Also, here's a pretty sunrise screenshot from Pyrite (Red team homeworld) on the Red vs Blue server:

Edit: Also, here's some interior shots of the Gremlin Corvette (a few posts up)

Nice! I thought about making something along the lines of an assault frigate. Fast, nimble and hits like a truck.

    Sweet! Dogfighting CV FTW! :D

My latest going ons in Empyrion is Red vs Blue Server Play: Got the Mining HV built now with aid from WarMachine, (That's an Epic Boss for ya!) who had to cart me off in a GMT CV with HV Parts in my Inventory so I could build it somewhere with its Core Encumbrance Limit not reached, then I got it roughly built, then he flew me back. Next play i'm gonna fine tune it, prep it, then time to mine up a storm! (With hunting on the side. Salami doesn't just grow on Trees. :p)

How'd ya like my new Tyrax Hunter Miner? :)

Also, if ya had been a GMT, I coulda given ya a lift. ;)

As for me: I've gone into Danube Ore Veins & ripped, tore, shredded, & clawed them clean of Resources... including 2 Sathium Ore Veins at 60something% Ore left but that had a 5 digit amount of Ore in the Vein... I got all that ore into the Sathium Processor in the GMT Base & it filled over 2/3rds of the Constructor's Inventory Space... all... by... itself... :D

Then I decided to go munch the last 27ish% of the last Copper Ore Vein, but in middle of that I lost Connection to Server & now it's no longer showing up on the Server List. I'm praying it's just doing some kinda Auto-Restart Maintenance thingies.

(Yesterday's post, which I forgot to hit Post Reply on) Work is continuing on Blue Nova Syndicate assets. Project Renegade, now retitled Project Barracuda, is progressing smoothly, although I'm debating whether rockets or pulse lasers are better suited for its role. I'm leaning towards just giving more aquatic classifications to our CVs - we are the Blue team after all. Plus sharks are awesome.

My first CV will be called the SS Thunderchicken. She will be a simple vessel designed for flying, shooting and other f$&kery. All my ships will also have the common "Honeybadger" coloration at the front of the ship.

So I finally gritted my teeth and began a full re-build of my Goblin Frigate, first hollowing out the inside (and discovering the armor was 5 - 6 blocks thick in most places o.o), and then going through and replacing the hull, block by block, with hardened steel. It was tedious, irritating work (seriously not sure I would have the motivation to do so in any larger of a ship), but I finally got it done (even the few blocks that evaded me most of the time).

After getting the hardened steel shell in place, I proceeded to paint it black (with the "apply to whole block" option selected) then went back inside. Since I painted it, I could see all the spots where the armor was only 1 block thick (as it would be black from the painting).

So, I layered the inside with a standard 2 - 3 blocks thickness of hardened steel plates (or more in vital areas), and then set to filling out the inside. I was very surprised how much more room there was now... all that armor had taken up a lot of room. Regardless, it is now basically set for RP purposes, as it included all the expected amenities, plus a dining hall, two crew quarters (with private bathrooms) and captains quarters (also with private bathroom). Since my warships of Destroyer class and lower will rarely have farms on-board, it is stocked with a few fridges so crew can survive for a while when on patrol (but not indefinitely).

No pictures of it currently, though.

    -----

In other news, I started a new Cruiser, based off a design I drew a week or two back. At 135 blocks long, it's actually the first planned CV I've built that turned out SHORTER than I expected (usually they're bigger!) by 10 blocks. Not much has gone into it yet, but here's a picture of the skeleton so far:

I shall call it the Ogre Cruiser when it's done (because it's big, lumpy, and will deal a lot of damage if it hits ya ;) ).

At the skinniest section, it is still 4 levels tall, each level being 5 blocks tall (total of 20 blocks bottom to top). At the biggest point (rear) it's about 8 levels tall or so (so basically 40 blocks tall). It will feature a large farm for self-sustainability, plus a decently sized hangar for SV docking, etc.

Basically, to keep it close to their real-world equivalents, any ship Cruiser size or larger should be equipped and capable of patrolling orbits and general cruising without the need for other ships. Basically, Cruisers will be the smallest self-sustaining ships in my fleet (with some exceptions), and, as a general rule, would be able to hold their own in open-space battles. As such, they will all have appropriately sized docking bays, farms, and quarters to accommodate crew.

Was on the Red/Blue Server today. Meet some very nice people there. All very willing to help a lone traveler out of a bind. Just need to get copper and I'm good. Then I can BP in my SV and base.

A word of note... if ya try to do this on Danube Alpha, ya might run into trouble. Danube Alpha's Core Limit is currently Encumbered.
