Are you okay with the monetization of Dedicated Servers in the way they are being implemented currently? The "#1" Server is a server which (according to others familiar with the server) has a pay2win mechanic. Basically, you can pretty much buy everything you need to play in the game and destroy whomever you want because you can pay the admins $xx.xx to basically give you enough resources to outpace what any player/faction can mine. Not nesecarily saying that's a bad thing, if you're an RPer with a fat pocket and don't wanna mine for your fancy CV you got off workshop all power to you, but my question to Eleon is *are you okay with that?*. You can be because it's their server which they pay for and own and do their own thing, or you don't approve and want to set some legal limitations on monetization that's seen as more "fair" to the greater player base. So far you guys haven't even acknowledged this is even a thing on your game, which I think it's important to decide how you want to approach this going forward.

    Hey Fenra,
I dont write as an popular Server owner (HWS) in the first place. I am a fair guy and want justice.
Well it is for sure not leagle and we had here a discussion about it: http://empyriononline.com/threads/h...vents-pve-pvp-custom-systems.5031/#post-43180 Minecraft had a quite good solution for it: https://mojang.com/2014/06/lets-talk-server-monetisation/
They have it on their monitor.

    As a server owner:
Well of course the server costs are high (mine costs 200€ per month) and you are really happy about donations no matter how high, for me at least. Even for no donators we help player when they lost things on wipe, give them their ships, some resources they lost cause of this, making restarts only for one player, etc..
But of course I want to motivate guys to donate a bit and say that they get resources / bp spawn depending on their playtime on the server as a thank you.
So beside the benefit of our tool regarding anti cheat we can address players, blueprints and resources accordingly.
But we don't like or want a pay2win system. For now it worked great and no player abused their little giveaway against new players or other players at all. If this will happen I will go against it of course.

It is a grey zone for now and of course honest guys have a disadvantage for now. I hope they will set some rules about this topic.

Hello everyone! The devs/Eleon has chosen not to address this subject at this point, except to say that charging money for any in-game asset or feature is strictly prohibited. It is their desire that a reasonable selection of free public servers remain available to the people who buy their game. As someone who talks to Eleon, I would suggest letting this subject rest for now until Eleon figures out exactly how he wants to address this matter.

Edit: All that being said, I thought that Mojang's response to the matter was both reasonable in its terms and generous in it's scope. I don't think we will get the same amount of leeway with Eleon, but I really think we might get something if we are careful not to poke a sleeping bear in the eye.

From my point of view not OK. But I'm generally against P2W concepts.
I have no problems money related, because instead of paying a s***load of money each month for a rented server, I just bought an upgrade kit on ebay and set up my own :-D.
My server is fairly stable (I'm not only using it for EGS) and it had a one-time cost of around 400€... with the advantage of having complete control over it, being able to use it otherwise, and so on. But on the other hand, it depends on the possibilites of your own internet connection. I'm in the lucky position to have a 120k line which I calculated to be able to support around 240 players (if I'd only use for that purpose) and a very fast problem response time.

But in the end, as long as such things are not locked down backend-wise, the players decide. You don't have to join a P2W server...

Yea, let us know how the one time cost of that connection works out for ya. Trust me, most game servers do not run terribly well on consumer grade uplines, and a connection that is appropriate to server services will cost you a pretty penny, month over month. At least, if you have a large community. You setup would be fine for a small playgroup of friends, but not much more.

The server is running EGS since 2 months, completely stable, never had a complaint so far.
Right now 5 players on there, upload usage ~0.35%, no lost packages in the last hour, connection stable.

Which is to be expected with your current population of 5 people. I would also point out that the game has not gotten near it's fully developed overhead yet. Just wait until servers have to manage SI, Fluid simulation for ship-atmospheres, and path finding for a large number of entities. SI and fluid simulation in particular are going to load connections pretty heavily once they start being used everywhere.

This is going off-topic. Let's keep the thread clean. Please PM me if you have further questions (all the IT-Administration apprenticeship, network technician specialist & IT-project management certifications and >10 years of business practice left some experience/knowledge after all, which I would happily share :))

Seems most of the opinions swing towards no on the paid service for dedicated servers, but let me rephrase; for donations, as in something someone donates to the server, should they get some kinda of in-game compensation for it, and if so, what kind?

I host servers for several games using 2 spare physical servers and a dedicated line. Sure there's a cost involved, but paying to get in game perks goes against the nature of many games (especially survival games). The only things I would class as acceptable for paying would be cosmetic items such as
    • custom skins
    • emotes
    • animations (dance...)
    • hand held items that do nothing (ghetto blaster, flower)
    • annoying pets (never ever "jar jar binks ")
If I do a good job as an admin, some players make a donation to my coffee fund, but it's not the way I see things going

Agreed. Like stated in the Minecraft essay on the subject (linked a few posts above) they basically say it's okay, as long as the doners are NOT getting an unfair advantage. So cosmetic stuff (skins, emotes, animations, flowers, non-combat pets, etc) is perfectly acceptable. However extra resources, or exclusive resources, or epic weapons, or things like that... not so much.

Ohhh that just gave me an idea: I WANT A CAPE!!! :p

    Hi ****,

No we dont have an official policy in place in the moment.

Feel free to monetize your server.

Sorry guys, we mis-understood what you meant with "monetize" - we thought you meant that you are a server provider who wants to rent a server. We will have an official statement regarding monetization (e.g. selling of items in-game) soon.

If anyone is charging me anything to play EGS on a server then it is to contribute to the cost of running the server, which would be like 10p. One off charge, once. After establishing that, before paying said amount, if there is any more charging of monies, I'm gone. No payments, no money, see ya. I want nothing to do with people wanting to make profit out of this. I can tell that a lot of people are going to try too.

    I will only play this game multiplayer among friends because;
    a) Who in their right mind wants to experience the trolling and hostile experiences of public multiplayer as ''fun''?
    b) I'll prefer to pay to provide my own server for me and my friends. They all just split the cost with me and everyone's happy.
    c) there are people who will want to make a profit out of you and they can all go to hell.
