Will do ... well... ASK, for some comparetive meassurements .... will also review this, AFTER i get my new ISP :S
Ping is the total time for the information to go from PC to server and back to PC, ping time, however if you have a slow CPU and its causing internal latency where fetching data from RAM and SSD or mechanical drives and causing .400 of a second latency just doing the games calculations, then your in big trouble because that is also going to be added to the 'ping' time and if you ping is usually 40 or 50 to a server expect it to jump massively with that sort of latency, and video cards cause latency just as much if there slow. ping is the total time, after everything is computed and done. Internal latency is so much more common than people think with there ping, especially if running a server where 20 people can connect, this drills the CPU and RAM use, we have all been on choppy servers before, where the internet connection is super fast but the server is lagging like a pig, that is a server system with massive internal latency problems. In Australia. Most home network modems will max out around 6 to 8 connections, more and the line gets crowded and pings start to spike badly, this is your standard modem from your ISP provider for home use, not a commercially bought one, you can buy some pretty awesome modems but they will cost a pretty penny. They can handle alot more on the local LAN network, this is usually because most of Australia is still COPPER phone line, we had a Labour gov that was going to give us optical but we ended up with a Liberal government that took it away , well played ozzie voters ! So if you have kids on Wifi at home, your server is not going to like you, your net connection will get lag spikes, if your kids all like streaming utube and talking on TS or Skype at the same time, your server is going to suffer packet loss and a laggy connection at times. If you are on an optical cable and were lucky enough to get that before the Liberals destroyed that infrastructure, you vote this year, you will never get optical under Liberal remember that, then your in the lucky position of having the capacity to run a server with literally up to 100 slots...........Easy. So got optical connection by any chance ? Got lots of nice fast RAM ? Got lot of MONEY !!!!! Like this is the most important one hahaha, if you dont pass that test your as humped as me ! Months of saving for a , basically idiotic amount of CPU / RAM power on a server board ! LOL the things we do.
Ugh, that is a LOT of stuff that can influence things I can easely see, where it makes sense, that the processingpower of the PC / server, adds to the total ping count :-/ You're not alone M8.... all copper here in Denmark aswell, unless yer REALLY lucky or rich, then, theres fiber for ya :-/
I had a lot of trouble hosting the game on Nitrado. They sold us a 4 slot package for the game that constantly crashed and behaved in a terrible buggy manner. At first we just thought the game was really buggy and didn't work at all because there was no reason to assume that Nitrado was the problem. But the moment we switched to another host that forced us to get a 16 slot instance suddenly the game was rock solid. I don't think that Nitrado should be a recommended host for this game. If that is going to continue then somebody who knows how things work needs to get in touch with them and either make the small server instances work or Nitrado should demand more slot instances for Empyrion. Frankly I almost ditched this game entirely because of the Nitrado experience. Glad I tried another host before quitting. Bro and I both wanted our own escape pods and property so direct connect just wouldn't cut it.
This is a terrible idea that will only make it easier for admins to cheat. The biggest threat to a dedicated server is the admin. Nobody can mess up game play faster and more irrevocably. I would prefer that the game be designed around the players with the barest minimum of admin functions. If that means that the game can only be controlled and modified with arcane multiple .yaml files being edited manually then so be it. I never fails to amaze me how much control people seem to need over things and other people. The game world you are describing sounds horrible. Like a bunch of server cops! How can people have fun in an environment like that? I suppose you will it is the only way people can have fun? 'Eh? The human race are such animals that only when we are tightly controlled by the superior intellect of another that we can be free to enjoy ourselves? Hogwash.
Yeah, I ended up just cobbling together years of 'old parts' into a junky case, stuffed it in my closet with a long ethernet cable to my dsl modem/router. Then I run a DS on that machine for me and my bro to play on. We have a blast doing co-op on it, and fooling around making stuff and exploring destroying things.
Ugh I dunno why I didn't think of this myself. I have an old computer that is pretty beefy sitting right here on my desk next to my new rig. Could have saved myself the almost 40 bucks I've spent on hosting!
I think that the base pois should have a no dig zone around them, kind of ruins the point of sieging when players just tunnel to the core block
I can't post in the Dedicated Servers area, so I'll post it here. I set up a server for myself and 3 friends to play on.but had issues getting the server name to show in the list. I had used port forwarding as instructed for ports 30000-30004 (I do the same for Minecraft, Team Speak, and several other things no problem). But what fixed the problem was adding port triggering for the same ports 30000-30004 on my internal router. Seems a little redundant, but it got it working. Thought I would share in case someone else has the same problems. My set-up is: ZeTEK VDSL router (NAT) port forwarding 30000-30004 to Linksys Smart WiFi (wired and wireless NAT) router port forwarding 30000-30004 AND port triggering 30000-30004 to my wired game server. ESET Smart Security software used on server, allowing the game and dedicated game executables to communicate in and out. I hope this helps someone else out there struggling to get a server going.
For those interested, this is the same feature as "loopback" on other routers. (particularly handy if you have a DNS name). Outbound traffic on that port - to the routers external IP (or DNS name that resolves to that ip address) is sent to the address you configured in NAT. Without actually having to go "out" past the router. That way when you connect to your own server, it wont look like 192.168.1.1:30000 (for example), and will more likely be "empyrionRunningOnAToaster.com:30000" (or the router's external ip address..) btw, I'd advise against opening up the telnet port (30004) to the internet unless you are confident of your firewalls and emp telnet password strength
* Also do not be alarmed if your main router does not have NAT Loopback or a variation of it. Its hit or miss. If your device doesn't, then you will need to live with connecting to your own server via Local IP, while your friends connect via WAN IP. (which is what I do). I just wish the "History" tab in the server UI, would actually remember my LOCAL IP I keep typing in every darn time
I would like to Reset my world (Wipe) on my dedicated server, but I can't find a thread that gives step by step details how to accomplish this task. Could someone please post instructions, or a link? Thanks!
Slayer2218: http://steamcommunity.com/app/383120/discussions/6/451851477891229539/ That should help you.. Server stability sucks at the moment. Get into my server, after a wipe and crash before landing in the escape pod, even worse, come back to the server, escape pod isn't there and I'm falling from a HUGE height to take over 40% damage, and this is after a Nitrado server fix. Cannot set the server for hard, normal or anything like that in the yaml file either, no known settings for that exist. While I get bugs, these are game changing, server crashing bugs that should have been worked out before this was launched. really sucks at the moment, got people wanting to play on the multiplayer server and cannot because it crashes all the time and puts starting stuff into the unknown void. Don't hear anything from anyone on this and have sent in emails to them as well.. silence is deafening and I am a HUGE fanboy, so come on folks, what's going on.
Capital Vessels. God forbid I say it again. http://empyriononline.com/threads/cv-turret-balancing.6435/#post-57931
ok this last update broke everything on my dedicated server... what is the 'trick' this time to get it to run?! <very irritating that the server config keeps changing!>
By the way... I found some nice servers on ebay cheap if anyone is interested. |Ebay Link| I bought mine (dual quads @ 2.66 Ghz with 16GB ram for 75$ after shipping... Runs dedicated beautifully. You may have to do some searching and be patient, but these are pretty regular guests on ebay... Yes, even at that price range.. |The one i bought| You can even mod these to update the gpu a bit to a Radeon HD 5450 (if the wattage of the card is under 20W) We cut the rear of the PCI-E 8x slot out to fit a full PCI-E 16X Graphics card. The 5450 runs fine like this, and the server runs all sorts of dedicated game server, and server emulator software just fine!
so it will start on default config. i can changer the NAME of the server but as soon as i try to change any other config it loads, then stops. ANYONE???
25-04:55:30.097 -ERR- Error while reading server configuration from C:/emp/steamapps/common/Empyrion - Galactic Survival/EmpyrionDedicated_Data/../dedicated.yaml 25-04:55:30.097 -EXC- (Line: 4, Col: 1, Idx: 171) - (Line: 4, Col: 1, Idx: 171): Exception during deserialization can someone, once in my lifetime make a error message that just gives a message that I don't need a phd in computer science to decipher?! btw i deleted all files and redownloaded the whole thing thru steam update. if i figure it out I will post it, if nothing else for my own reference!
