I seem to remember trying that, but it didn’t have any effect (FPS exactly the same before and after).
That’s our experience as well (including the part about looking “through” the planet to where the sun should be).
To add to this, when facing the sun, @elmo’s frame rate can go as low as 5-10fps, whereas my own can go down to 15-20fps. Specs: (@elmo) AMD...

The large crooked trees in the radiated areas (at least on the Arid starter planet) are invisible also in build 3444. Keep bumping into them.
