To break up the blocky design, I landed a spacecraft on my starship and turned it into an antenna.

    Has anyone else done this?

I thought it turned out pretty well. So I went bat crap crazy.

    Lan Room.jpg

Best lan party room ever? Come on... it's on a starship with a big view of a ringed world, the computer case comes with a deflector shield and every station has it's own purple fridge. I gotta at least be in the running.

This is a pirate yacht. Of course it's going to have a wet bar with big ole speakers. I mean, duh, right?

    Missiles.jpg

These missiles were placed above the retractable missile turrets on the bottom of the AK.

And it's not something I can share on the workshop. For me to get this ship out of creative, I had to save every piece of 'furniture' as it's own ship and then place them and recreate them. It's almost painless if you make sure to hit O on the starship first.

I could make a scenario with the ship in all it's weirdness, but I don't want to have to learn that. I mean, I had to learn 'signal logic' for this build.

Oh, and the AK refers to my ship, Avada Kedavra, which I think is a real message of peace in these troubled times. It's also my initials.

And if you don't know what Avada Kedavra means, say it really fast.

That's a cool idea! Now I can relate that to the post where you asked about saving several blueprints in one, because that is exactly the kind of thing it would allow.

I used the scenario workaround to achieve something similar, and I used small SV/HV blocks to make detailed parts inside a base. I also used some SV/ HV devices which are smaller to add more detail and functions (like you did), like non-shooting sentries stuck high on walls to act as cameras all linked to one console (the SV proper), elevators, MAGLEV trains (straight line), etc.

It's long been a tactic to dock small craft inside CVs and use them as furniture to exploit the smaller block scale.

This is cool. The only problem I really see is there are several bugs that affect docked vessels. One where they randomly undock/eject and another where they slide into whatever they are docked to.

Other than modular CVs I've seen quite a few SVs on the workshop that utilize docked HVs for additional function like storage, clone chamber etc. Really cool concept.

I actually use an HV Fridge build pretty frequently when I need to power off my CV but keep my food fresh. I keep it docked in the hanger though because of the aforementioned bugs.

Good to know. I've never seen it but then again, I don't really keep up except for having Spanj as a Utoob favorite. And the bearded one has never mentioned it that I know. Obviously it doesn't show up on steam.

Bet it plays havoc with the AI seeing all those cores coming at it. Has that happened to others? I'm really curious about that.

Also, there's guns on that antenna. If I keep it fueled and ammoed up, it's actually useful. It might help to put thirty small craft guided missile launchers or plasma turrets up when I needed the extra umph and then took them down when it was time to fly into town and look presentable. Maybe a gunship config where all the guns are on one side and aimed at turrets as I do orbits around my prey. I'd like to know people's experience with that kind of thing.

And one final thing I'm curious about. Does anyone think this is wrong or cheating or uncooth or somehow not what a player should do? I know it's my game and my decision, but how do people think of it as a concept?

It has shown up in discussion in the Steam forum. Since that has been, for SIX years now, my primary means of discussion about the game, that is in fact where I heard/saw other people using small craft as furniture. I have just one example myself, and I don't use it much.

The AI is not confused by docked cores. They quite effectively do not exist when docked. Neither weapons nor shields of docked structures are allowed to function, so those minigun turrets are purely for show. The reason for that is to prevent players exploiting small craft as "meat shields" or cheap gun emplacements on CVs.

The closest you can come to making a functional version of this concept is what I once used to do with my CV: I had a dedicated depression in the top of my CV, and I designed a small HV with rocket launcher turrets to fit into it precisely. I had to spawn the HV directly into it, as there was no means of maneuvering it to get there. Once spawned in place, it became a permanent addition to the ship for static planetary defense when undocked, adding rocket defenses that were otherwise impossible for CVs in atmosphere in the vanilla game. I wasn't an exploit because it had to be undocked to function and the CV couldn't move so long as it was undocked.

I don't think you've yet played the game enough to understand constraints like this. There are many functional aspects of the game that you simply cannot intuit. Keep playing!

Dunno about that, but I do have a very cheap "CV", that serves as a base floodlight, since we can't have those nice big floodlights on bases. It's basically a big pole with either 1, 2, 3, or 4 of the CV spotlight blocks, a fuel tank, generator,, and an on/off switch.

I modded the game to enable those spotlights everywhere. When I excavate huge CV hangars out of a mountainside, they're the only illumination sources with enough reach to illuminate the floor from the high ceiling!

That is another route, but given the game is still technically "early access", despite having dropped that Steam label a while ago - that it's not at Full Release version yet, I haven't bothered making any modifications of this sort. While most aspects of the game are highly customizable, I'm just not one to invest time in doing these sorts of things, only to have the "next update" invalidate them. I'm fine with working within the confines of the vanilla base game until we reach Release-level.

Likewise, I use absolutely no mods or custom scenarios for the same reason - not because there aren't any good ones out there, there certainly are, just not willing to play the "game changed, now this needs its own update" game as well.

The update game is not that bad. Most patches introduce few to no changes to any ECF files. You quickly learn that the efficient method is to keep a backup of the last version's files and then compare those with the latest and copy/merge any changes into one's modded files.

What REALLY gets extensive and time-consuming are making detailed changes to all the playfield files because there are so very many of them scattered across dozens of directories. Just ask Ravien. I mod a few of them selectively, but I couldn't stomach modding all of them yet.

I use beyond compare for that. Makes it quite easy to review and merge the differences.

Does Beyond Compare allow comparing just two of the three but still allow merging into a third? WinMerge doesn't seem to allow for that use case.

Use whatever works for you. In beyond compare I just use 2 way with local git as a backup. I believe bc can do merge to a new output, however that doesn't suit my workflow.
