Start moving forward in any direction. Go into map and lock a target. Turn ship towards target, but do not stop or modify direction ship is moving in. Press k. Oh shush. :-D I often use SPACE (accelerate upwards) while facing (aiming at) the target I want to warp to. Incredibly handy when there is an asteroid between you and the warp destination.
