Hey, Folks, Coming back to this game after a little bit of a break and I am noticing there are a LOT of controls to this game! Has anyone figured out (who has a gaming keypad) how to set this up properly? The vision I have is that there is a standard control scheme (movement basic actions etc.) - [Keybind 1], then some method of a seamless transition between other keybinds, but I can't seem to sort this out with the methods of creating keybinds I know of. Trying to use a particular key to "cycle" through the keybinds and then try to remember which one you're using doesn't seem efficient and a high probability of constant errors, but neither does HOLDING a key down to then press a modifier key - there's just too many commands for that to work. If anyone sorted this out, I would greatly appreciate it being shared here as using a keypad seems like the best method honestly - IF it can be programmed to include every instance of commands needed. Thanks!
Just a thought (since no one has replied) - I would think this is more of a question for the Support people or the manufacturer's Forum (if there is one) of the Keypad. There may be a number of people who play EGS with a keypad, but you'd be relying on one of them randomly seeing your post on here. The Keypad's support would more likely be able to help.
The problem is that there are indeed too many keybinds to fit on a single "profile" so there has to be some profile switch "on the fly". I can do that with my (quite) old G13 keypad + G300 mouse : I can have 3 "layouts" per profile, even assign different backligthing to each, then assign one of the mouse buttons to switch between layouts. I use a similar system when working in other programs, like Blender 3d + Unity, where I keep a "core" of main controls at the same spot (ex. wasd for movement) and then just re-map similar functions to keys in the same position on the keypad. When I switch application, I hit a key on the mouse and also switch layout, which "feels" the same because I keep some consistency between functions/ positions on keypad + mouse, like pan/ rotate view - move/ rotate object, with "shift" key, or scale/ zoom, or open tools menu, etc. For a game, it's a bit different : there are cases where we can't lose any time switching layouts (ex. combat) and other situations where we have lots of time to fool around, like when in a safe spot (trader) or in creative. Since there are a limited number of keys and too many bindings to get them all on 1 layout, I use that difference to put "action" layout as the main one, and the secondary layout for more relaxed contexts where I can afford to waste time. So it's all up to everyone's style, in the end. I don't use all keybinds because some actions can be done with only one key, as we can see in many games. I can assign only 1 key to the inventory, and from there I can simply use the mouse to click on the icons leading to other parts of the UI. Same for building : I only use 2 keys : (1) rotate block (right), and (1) change rotation axis, since we can get to the same result by just pressing a few more times on the same key. This leaves some room for other, more "crucial" keys on a layout. I don't play on servers, so all the chat commands are ignored. If I was to do so, I would have another specific layout just for this because there are too many keys for chat functions to integrate in an "action play" layout without taking out some more important keys. And obviously, except in rare emergency situations, if we have time to chat via typing then we may not be in a hurry. Another solution is to simply buy another, more comprehensive keypad, like one of these : https://www.fentek-ind.com/keypad.htm Or use an old gamer's trick and make a cardboard "mask" with stickers that can be fit over a regular keyboard, hiding all unused keys and having explicit colors and text helpers on the cardboard. I used to do that for flight simulators when there were just too many keys to remember everything. And if you think Empyrion has lots of bindings, go check Star Wars: The Old Republic... it's almost a bad joke...
