In case you like shooting stars, the nights of Dec. 13 and Dec. 14 are probably interesting for you. The Geminid Meteor Shower will be in full swing and NASA has estimated, that under ideal viewing conditions, stargazers may see as many as 100 meteors per hour. The "best time" is 10pm local time until dawn and it is recommended to drive some miles out of citys and away from other bigger light sources. Your eyes will need around 20 minutes without light to adapt to the darkness for "maximum night vision level". One look at your smartphone or other bright things, even half of a second, and you can wait another 20 minutes.
I think if you use a piece of red cellophane over your phone or flashlight you will be ok for viewing without waiting another 20 minutes.
