I noticed on a public server I played on that the console opened with tilde key and I also noted that: in the various logs I saw in the console there was repeated reference to a seed: specifically 1872345. Now then, some of the things I discovered in the instance of the game world on that particular server I found to be rather amazing and fascinating and I wanted to explore these things in more detail, but was unable to continue playing on said server. I created a singleplayer instance with the same seed and my cursory examination suggests that: the two game worlds are NOT identical and perhaps not even very similar. Specifially, one solar system in paritcular called "Eukinoa" was IN both worlds, but its location in the singleplayer instance was very far off from the solar systems location on the server. So all of this to ask in general: how is it that seeds actually work? With a game like Minecraft or even Banished, if you replicate a specific character string you get EXACTLY the same game world, right down to the smallest meaningful unit. There are multiple plausible explanations: (a) that number I saw referenced as "seed" in the server console is NOT the actual game world generation seed but perhaps a child seed that was referencing something more local to my character at the time. I saw this seed show up repeatedly in many different local settings so I'm a bit skeptical of this explanation. (b) the way in which a specific character string "seed" functions in generation of a multiplayer game world and a singleplayer game world are not identical. (c) the seed does not specify things like specific solar system names and those are populated by some other random algorithm separate from the seed. So for example, if I were to go to the X,Y,Z coordinate of the "Eukinoa" I referred to above from the server in the singleplayer instance, I would find "the same" solar system, just with a different name? (d) there is still a great deal of random variation in two instances of the same seed I know very little about procedural generation in games, and would like to learn more whether specific to EGS or in general. If anyone can answer any of my questions or direct me to a repository of information on the topics I appreciate it.
Seeds to replay the game are 6-numbers long and in the console they are named 'global seed'. If you play on a server your seed nr. doesn't make much sense because the server admin can change the playfield to his liking, restrictions, special allowances etc., so you are not going to have the same situation or POIs all the time if you repeat with the same seed. If you want the same POIs and situations then you must restart the game with a particular seed in SINGLE PLAYER. I had to do this after Eleon changed some POIs with a new patch in order for the solo mission to play correctly. All the world was identical.
