Hey, so I don't know if others encountered this issue, but I tried to do some silly/stupid things on planets, and the game doesn't seem to like it.

Specifically, I encounter the following problems:
    • Terrain loading is slow
    • Terrain never fully loads
    • Drones do not die properly (they 'die', but they have no animation and are not lootable)
I triggered this behavior doing the following:
    • Creating a lava planet with 100% 'water' (meant to emulate a mini-sun, don't ask)
    • Setting a planet to "temperate" but was originally lava, has lava biomes
Is what I'm doing not actually possible/feasible? Should I rewrite all biomes when I change a planet's type?

Planet type in the playfield.yaml/playfield_static.yaml? You can set that to anything you want, including spaces. That shouldn't matter and as far as I know is only used in the in-game description of the planet when a player looks at the planet info, and possibly things like PDA missions. Note that if you're using EPD, it by default doesn't let you change it from one of the defaults but you can manually change it later.

As far as creating a 100% water planet, I did that just fine in alpha 8 (entire surface covered in water except the poles). I didn't try a 100% lava planet though.

One issue I did run into was if I set the water level too high, it caused some... glitchiness. What is your water level set as?

Can you share your playfield here? It's hard to figure out without being able to take a look. Upload it as a zip file or rename the playfield and terrain files to .txt and upload them individually.

I can tell you that when you log in and your already on the planet, usually runs ok, when you leave any planet playfield and re enter it from space, its always a little slower at loading terrain for some reason, for this reason sometimes when i re enter a planets atmosphere, I actually relog so that i log back in fresh before i continue flying down to the ground.
Everything runs smoother the terrain loads up faster etc.

Not sure if maybe thats the issue you had or is the planet just generally shitty at loading stuff even when you log in straight to it ?

Also what size did you make the planet ?

Also if your using the temperate/lava template that applies to the old style planet loading (akua or aestus etc )and not the new terrain mapping templates, I heard the older ones were slow at loading generally, if I remember right.

We have a few temperate templates now and I am pretty sure one of them is still the old school terrain loading. Not 100% on that because this game changes everything so often...

One further thought, with 100% water, I presume then you disabled all fauna spawns etc ? as there would be nowhere for them to spawn, I would disable anything in the playfield yaml that would normally need land to spawn on.
perhaps something is stuck in a spawn loop and giving the playfield the shits.

Just a theory but these are all the things I would be checking because I have made a few planets myself and dealt with some issues ^-^

The old terrains don't even work anymore I think.

    So, in order:
    1. Planet type for the 'sun' is lava I think. Planet type for the other system is temperate
    2. When I created a 100% lava planet, I merely set the water/land ratio to 1. It's sea level is at 80, terrain at 100, base at 7.
    3. Planet sizes for both are at 3. I did actually experience the things you described when I logged into the playfield itself! However this isn't really a good solution for people entering
    4. Using the new terrain mapping, whatever is most current
    5. for the lava sun I did *not* disable fauna, and I can confirm that fauna does exist on the bottom of the 'ocean'. In the future I can remove that crap so it spawns better.

    Another weird issue...

With my temperate planet, I seem to be always flying up instead of down when entering the playfield. This makes things awkward because I end up flying right back to orbit. I can eventually enter the playfield by moving very slowly into the atmosphere, but it's kinda annoying to have that. Any idea what's causing it?

I was able to create a lava planet by setting water ratio to 1, lowering the terrain level and raising the water level, and removing the lowmountains biome. 100% lava except at the poles. I only saw some minor graphics glitching with the lava textures but some of that seems to happen to me on normal lava planets too.

I did not find any drones to test.

Cools, I will try this next time I'm tinkering with the playfields. I also think the game doesn't like me swapping certain values. like water types and whatnot.

You should be able to change water type without any problems.
