Hey all, Often on a fresh start, if I want to make a quick "base camp" and protect myself from being jumped by hostile critters, I'll create a little "fort" type camp. Basically, I'll set down the Portable Constructor, O2 Gen, Heater etc. in a given spot, then spawn in a single block "base". Said block is just a single concrete block, but I can then build off that to make walls, or perhaps a little bunker-style structure over my camp. No devices, no defences, no Core of course. This used to be a great method to fortify a camp early-game. It's the same principal as finding, and building on - again no Core - any of the wreck sites. It's just some walls to help prevent surprises. As such a structure is Core-less, it never used to trigger base attacks. However, for a while now they have. I'd just started a fresh game earlier today, did the pile of unowned blocks "fort" thing again. Worked great. After a short while, I got a base attack warning... well, as there's strictly-speaking NO base here, I half expected the Troop Transport to turn around. It did not. However, while I dealt with the two Zirax troops that landed, my "base" was instantly "captured" the moment they deployed. Now, it's normally really easy to take back a base - destroy the Zirax core - well, an easy concept but a Player base might be quite the challenge depending on how defences are placed of course. However, this is just a pile of Concrete Blocks, so ZERO challenge... except for one tiny detail... My "base" is now showing as red on the map with a "[Zirax]" prefix... it's not a neutral structure any more. However, like it never had a player core, it doesn't have a Zirax Core either, so there's nothing to destroy, I cannot take back what was never mine, nor can I add additional blocks to it. Basically, my "base" (not a base!) structure is Zirax-owned without a Core. I used God Mode to double--check there was no hidden core, and there really is no Core. Is this a bug? Seems at least bug-adjacent if nothing else. I don't know when exactly such neutral, unowned structures seeded from a single-block BP started triggering Base Attacks, but I really don't think they should. No Core (ever!) should = no base attack. Now, sure, if a player "camp" - aka deployed items such as a Constructor etc. - is spotted by a Drone, sure, attack away. However a pile of unowned blocks, nope. Now, technically, I'm guessing this pile of blocks gains "base" status as it's made from a BP, albeit a single block one. However, also technically, surely a Base Starter block, or a pile of blocks (wreck or whatever) needs a Core to be a Base. Perhaps this is a deliberate balance choice, perhaps not. However, as a pile of blocks - even if from a BP - cannot be interacted with, no control panel, surely a Base attack should never be triggered as it's not a base...yet. If the player later adds a Core - sometimes I'll do this, if the camp location warrants it - then, of course, base attack away. Does anyone else use this "camp" technique early-game? Whether it be exploiting an existing core-less wreck, or using the "single concrete/metal block" BP approach? I supposed a secondary question would be "should faction ownership be allowed at all without a Core to legitimise it?".
Certainly a strange one, I usually (being a habitual or serial restarter) dig into the side of a mountain or cliff, ond once there create half a dozen atmospheric condensers, and line them up, then set about making the tools I'll need going forward. as an aside point I don't like getting the key to a locked gate given to me, why lock the gate in the first place, so making things out of fresh air is kinda 'off' for me so the 'free' tools need to have a recipe (which I've added for my game) As a general rule the do-it-all gun (survival tool) is the only thing thats in the pod with me upon crashing though sometimes I even put that in the trash and hope that I can scavenge the materials for that in any containers I may find. The most annoying spawn result I had was a small carbon base that I'd spent all my hard stolen and gathered materials on just destroyed by a rocket drone I'd not seen, I just spawned it and turned to go pick up my survival constructer and Boom... boom...boom! "You B******d" That was my turning point, no more Mr nice guy, I was now Tony Stark's evil and vengfully twisted half brother
