I can actually walk all the way around it, but it is not pretty, and sometimes the incline is vicious.
I suppose, depending on the length of the thing, you could potentially use two gravity generators, mounted on each end, rotated 90 degrees, so the gravitational pull is towards the "ends". Things get tricky when tinkering with multiple gravity generators, but I've also had a lot of fun using multiple gravity generators.
I'm not sure what you're trying to achieve with gravity in that thing anyway. If you're trying to walk "around" it like the inside of a barrel, you can do it with gravity generators facing each direction that are controlled by motion sensors relative to your location within the structure. It will have issues with multiple people inside it though, as Grav-gens operating on opposite sides will nullify each other resulting in no gravity. Unless everyone stays in the same section of the ship.
I was actually able to put enough distance between the generators to do a complete walkaround the barrel, but it is not pretty. If the generators had more of a gradient to the falloff of their fields, it probably wouldn't be so bade, but I doubt the devs are trying to fool with that right now.
I've only just noticed your article. If I remember correctly, there is a gravity system in the ring of this amazing spaceship. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1335435921 The system may match for your cylinder CV. (Put a sphere on the front bottom and let your spaceship call for whales next to Earth o: )
I have space station in SE that is basically a cylinder and had wanted to re-create it in this until I discovered how limited the gravity is. I have landing pads on each of the 4 axis aligned interior walls - in SE you can control the exact extent of gravity fields so each landing pad end up with its own aligned gravity that cover just the pad and a few meters above it. Works really well. The rest of the station I have long axis aligned gravity, so it kind of weird when you look up through windows into the hangar bay as you can see the ships on the pads looking like they are hanging on the walls I do wish gravity generators in this had such control - would make space station design ALOT more interesting. Currently they just feel like ground station floated in space. A couple of screenshots of my SE station if interested: On approach to hangars In hangar - 8 pads each with their own local gravity Yes - blocks in SE are fugly compared to this
Are you attempting to replicate an O'Neill cylinder without the rotation? That's actually pretty interesting. I'm imagining a truly massive space settlement with hangars large enough for multiple CVs.
That or something similar to the Behemoth from the Expanse. Been a while since I've worked on it, but I'm looking to get back to it here soon.
