I built an SV and attacked this frigate and it's homing missiles kicked my butt. In fact, I died due to an explosion even though the cockpit was still intact. I looked at the damaged ship and saw that the eggshell of armor I'd made surrounding the components was breached and nearly every block inside it was destroyed.

And I was like hmmmm....it shouldn't be like that. Everything shouldn't be destroyed unless something set other things off.

So I made a copy of the ship and started shooting missiles and plasma at it. The blocks remained fine for a while with a small number of components being destroyed. Then one missile created a big explosion and everything in the armor shell got destroyed.

There were three fuel tanks in there and my guess is that they blew up because I noticed a triple staggered explosion. It was like 'bam bam bam'...real quick. Or it might have been other stuff exploding, but I was losing other parts without the catastrophic explosion while the fuel tanks remained intact. So I don't know. It seems to be the fuel tanks that set off the big explosion that destroyed everything but that's kind of a guess.

So, if that's true, where does one put fuel tanks so they don't undo all the genius other things I'm doing to make my SV awesome?

First, fuel tanks don't get specifically targeted by AI, do they?

Should they be on pods outside the ship with their own armor so if they go they don't take out all the other components? That's an aweful lot of extra stuff and added complexity I'd rather not add. I spend a lot of time making my ships look beautiful and not blocky so part of my reluctance is aesthetics. But if I'm flying the Empyrion version of a Pinto, (an old car that exploded a lot), it needs to be done.

What's the blast radius of a fuel tank and does it matter how much fuel is in it. In other words, before battle should I take out most of the fuel ?

Do steel blocks reduce the blast damage of the ships own components exploding so all I need to do is wrap the fuel tanks in armor?

Has anyone thought about this and come up with a solution that works well?

Yes, your fuel tanks can explode, and they will set off a chain reaction.

I personally stick them as close to center mass as possible, and if I'm building the ship for fighting, I'll separate the tanks with a wall of combat metal in between them. In my CV I stick them closer to the rear, and will have multiple banks of tanks. They are positioned so that if they do get set off, they will not take out any other devices. At least not anything critical anyway.

Lots of redundancy of both fuel and generators (since they added the idiotic exploding generator bullshit whenever your power touches 100%) or huge vessels with alot of space between shell and internals.

In practice it really means get away from combat before shields fail and unshielded small vessels must never go anywhere near explosives (especially in multiplayer with broken net code 'optimisations' that seems to remove your ability to evade).

All explosive projectiles damage a 3x3x3 centered on the impacted block at the same scale as the grid the explosion hits.
Because this is centered on the block that gets hit, the range includes whatever's behind the armor block which is usually a device that's considerably less durable than the armor itself.
Fuel tanks, warp drives, ammo boxes and generators when destroyed produce an explosion of similar size inside the ship, which may take out multiple other devices if it starts a chain reaction.

Any blast radius above 0 on a projectile will always be 3x3x3 regardless of what it's set to. An artillery shell with a blast radius of 20 will still hit 3x3x3. I've tested this all very thoroughly.
Though if they ever fix this bug, and make it so that explosions don't scale to the size of the target craft: SVs will be completely devastated by CV weapons which will have explosions half the size of the ship (unless they fix explosion calculation to only affect the surface).

What Vermillion left out- and he should have bragged about it, because it's awesome- is that Reforged has a possible fix for the explosion damage, so you might want to give it a try

Be prepared that it's a lot tougher than vanilla also- in a good way ;)

First, I don't have a problem with this. You breach a fuel tank and you're going to have a bad day - even if the shell around you remains intact, it's getting turned into an oven and you're getting crispy. I would never want this changed.

As for placement - you either bury them deep inside, at least 4 blocks deep, or place them way towards the outer edges. I've a few builds that use fuel tanks on opposite sides of the construct, in their own armored "pods" to protect both the fuel tanks and the other components of my builds.

Of course, and the Reforged tweak doesn't prevent that- it blunts the amount of force coming through the armor, instead of having it spread equally in a volume. More realistic, as armor acts like armor. If you get breached, then you have a problem

I'm actually familiar with it, I just don't use any mods at this point.
Given that Empyrion is still developmental, I'd rather wait until the "Final Release" version, when I can be pretty certain the code base and overall game is not going to be changing or changing much before I invest time in mods - or write my own.

Plus, the better I am in a "vanilla" version, the better I'll be at adapting to modifications.

Same, the only reason I haven't grabbed reforged is because I don't want to deal with tossing out everything I've done so far...

And it also seems like many of the reforged "fixes' creep into the regular game in some form or fashion as versions roll on.

How many more years until final release I wonder. LOL

Does it really matter, as long as the final release is solid and as close to bug-free as it can get?

I'm curious as to, does the blast travel through an empty block or does it stop there?
To clarify, if I place a fuel tank 1 block away from the ship shell, leaving a 1 block air gap, will the fuel tank still get damaged if the ship shell gets hit neat that tank?

It's an AOE effect, so in vanilla, yes full damage as it it was exposed

In Reforged, reduced by the armor

    Test it !

I think Brimstone did not understand what you meant, but if I remember well this is (was?) one of the tricks used in PvP to build ships with an air gap between blocks so Blast Damage would not propagate.

Ok, I have just tested this:
Got a CV and equipped it with different weapons, all up to an Artillery Turret.
I then build 4 CV walls. 1 Combat steel, 1 Hardened Steel, 1 Steel and 1 Carbon Composite.
None of the rounds/rockets did any damage to the 3rd deep block. All damage was to the first 2 layers.
Even shooting an artillery shell at a Carbon Composite wall just destroyed the first 2 layers. No damage to the 3rd layer.

Why does it matter how many years until final release?

Do I...have to answer that? Or did you misunderstand the statement I made?

In case anyone was curious, the grass is still green, water is still wet, and it still matters how many years it takes to deliver a final release of a game. That's about as far from a controversial statement as I can make.

I am curious as to what you class as 'final release'.
Take Minecraft and 7D2D, like Epmyrion they are both sandbox games. They are still evolving and the way it looks now, they always will be. There will not be a 'final release' in the foreseeable future.

7DTD is starting to wrap things up. I think we'll see the beta there by next Summer with final release in the Fall. Then it's getting a publisher for the console, and some DLC while they start the next game. :) Plans.
They have a basic roadmap, and have been sharing their plans for the better part of the past year or so. At least when they leave EA, it will actually be because the game is going Gold, and not just entering a questionable stage of development.
