It's larger than you think This is the full screenshot. I wanted a landing pad for my larger CV's. My only problem is finding a flat area large enough to spawn it.
Yeah, tell me about it...large and flat...I search always for such areas For one of my larger Bases I found a neat and suitable Place...a small LAKE!
Hi folks I hoping to run something by the people here that have an idea of the constraints of the unity engine before I drop it into the suggestions section so I don't waste peoples time with a thread for an idea that is completely implausible. So I was thinking recently about building a set of modular structures that would allow you to spawn a small starter base and then expand on it via blueprints as you got more resources. With the current system all you really get is a collection of seperate building in a cluster. I could probably try to be a bit more ambitious and have corridors and everything so that as long as I spawn it right everything will line up perfectly etc but that seems laden with problems especially on servers where bp placement mistakes are gonna be a bit of a ball ache to fix(and by fix in mean deconstruct and try again.) A way around this could be a sub class of blueprint specifically for modular building. This bp wouldn't have a core and could only be spawned by attaching it to an existing BA (or potentially any structure/vessel with the bp turning red if there was a block type/device count conflict) it would snap to the structure during placement acting more like a block placement than a bp placement. Now in terms of how we build these I can only see it being possible in creative. You'd build a piece, remove the core ( I think having to have a core to set the type of thing your building may be important as you'd probably still only be able to stick BA to BA etc) and click a button in the build menu that would convert it to a modular bp. You could also carve an existing base into chunks with the cut and paste feature and then/or have a selection box that you drag to size and again click that convert button. So folks is this a plausible idea or am I just revisiting something that has been shot down before?
I'm not familiar with Unity however modular building should be technically possible since you can already do the exact same thing in creative mode. You can currently copy and paste sections or entire blueprints together at will, so the devs would just need to add a way to do this in survival mode. Something that has been on my wishlist for awhile now. You can actually do this in survival mode too but it involves using console commands. You can set the position of a base via console command and then merge it to another structure with another command. So there's already 2 different ways of modular building but both require creative mode or console commands currently.
I'd love it if the mergestructs command were a LOT more user friendly and/or you could snap new structures to existing ones. I love the idea of modular bases that can be added onto over time but it's kind of impractical at the moment.
Modular bases would solve all the problems with current progression in bases. Earlygame usually consists of making a cheap base that fulfills the minimum requirements, then people don't move out of it because it's too much work, so there's little incentive to make new bases unless you can either remove the old one quickly and efficiently along with all the containers; or to introduce a system that allows modular expansion. So you can go from a single small warehouse to a modular Industrial park of warehouses, factories and landing pads. Oh, and today I made a HV. The FA-028 Spider tank. Not particularly useful, except for killing ground troops and drones. Goes with the rest of the spiderbot series.
Those spidertanks are remarkably well done! Did you have some direct inspiration or was it just a general approach to the concept?
Trial and error. I've done a lot of bug-like ships, like the big base spider over the back in the first screenshot (FA-018B Sentinel), which used larger, improved versions of the Sentry, also in the shot (The tall legged turrets things). The spidertanks are just smaller, improved versions of the Sentinel. You should see the first spider tank I built. It's horrible. I never posted it in this thread because it's so horrendous. The missing FA-007 Excavator. Wow, it's even worse than I remember. It's from before the more colors feature was added.
@Furious Hellfire you still in the "Boat-Building"-Industry? If so today i stumbled over a picture of a Solar powered Boat...built by an Austrian Company
Overhauled the FA-016A Sentinel into the FA-016C Sentinel. Gave it the new leg shapes so it's not propped up over the ground and now sits flat on the ground. Only works on flat ground though, since you get structural integrity issues at the knees if a foot isn't touching the ground (This is a base, not a CV... yet). (note: that is the back, not the front... not that there's really a difference) This end is the front.
That thing looks cool! Reminds me of some advanced scifi ship landing to explore or conquer a planet.
Great look - especially the underslung body. Your mix of colors + textures + stencils fits it perfectly.
I've been working on a few things. Experimenting mostly. I originally started with a saucer but I didn't like how the UFO I built turned out so I branched out into other shapes. This one would fit right in with the Star Wars universe but you won't find it there. I might finish this one up. Spoiler Another experiment. Trying to alter the saucer shape to be less saucery. I'll probably scrap it. Spoiler Sometimes the best designs come about from happy accidents. This one was unintentional. I was tearing down a build to make something else with it and decided I liked this better. I'm going to finish it eventually. Spoiler I couldn't resist. I can't get the same fidelity with it as I can with small vessels. Having to take a lot of liberties with the design, especially because I'm keeping all the thrusters vented. Size class 1 so far. I should be able to keep it under size class 6 making it useable on public servers. Spoiler I had to take more liberties with the thruster arrangement in order to get the speed and acceleration I wanted. Not very Millennium Falcon like. More like an Aluminum Falcon. I think the medium thrusters probably need to be tweaked to output more power. It seems like I need more than I should to get a small build like this moving. Spoiler
