so, iv been trying to use the copy past to take the wings off a ship and put onto another one. iv got the wings to where they need to be but i cant for the life of me work out how to attack them, they just sit there as a separate entity

A copy from one building/ship pasted near another still belongs to the original one.

Use Mergestructs to join them into one entity and then what you are doing will work.

    Console commands:
    Mergestructs parentid childid
    Mergestructs parentid childid -ex

The first aligns them so you can adjust positions the second commits the merger and deletes the child’s core.

    Get their ids with:
    find <partial name>

Essentially what I suggest you do is merge your two vehicles into one entity (even though they are still separated by a bit of space), copy your blocks over and then delete the vehicle you don’t want.

When you copy from one structure entity, and want to paste to another... make sure you go over to the other one and do this:

    • After making a selection on the first structure and clicking the "Copy" button...
    • Close the build helper menu, and move over to the new structure...
    • Open the build helper menu
    • UN-tick "Selection"
    • RE-tick "Selection"
    • Click ON the new structure to start a new selection (it can remain a 1x1x1 blue box)
    • Now click the "Paste" button
    • The paste will now be associated with the new structure, and not the original one (it should also be a green bounding box)
    • Move it where you want it.
    • Click the "Paste" button a final time to 'solidify it' (it will now look like its in a blue bounding box).
    • UN-tick the "Selection" checkbox to confirm the part is still stuck there.

The deselect button does both at the same time, with less chance of jamming the N-menu.

You whippersnappers and your fancy deselect buttons. Why when I was makin ships, we had to hand deliver each part through the snow and rain!

We whippersnappers weren't subject to shipbuilding in rain and snow because we hand assemble them in space!

I’ve been playing around with the copy/paste method too and it works great.

    Thanks for posting it.

You cannot copy dynamic ship blocks, it needs to be put in the game and not in the game world or it will simply not get used.

So this means you cannot use this to select-cut-copy-paste on a GROUP of blocks from one ship to another (or edit the same ship). An example would be to make a ship wider by selecting say, half of it, cut the block group off, widen the center then replace the group back in place.

I made an extra deck in my Jupiter 3 by doing just that. I also created my 4 ball builds by doing that on an old design. I think they work just fine although perhaps something is wrong I am not aware of?

Really? Wow! So the above procedure is what I follow to accomplish that?

And forgive me, still very much a noobie with editing/modifying.

Perhaps I dont understand fully what is being posted here? I just cut a ship in half (a CV and an SV) and added a deck in and then reattached the half I cut off. Maybe thats not what you guys meant?

Step by step, HOW do you...

    -Select a group of blocks

    -Cut them

-Then paste them where you want

(I am assuming this ONLY works in creative mode)

    :)

Well, I dont want to write it out because Ill probably miss something. I will try to get a video made of me doing it in real time. When its done ill post it here so you can see. BTW while I consider myself an expert in functionality, I am by no means any where near the expert some in here are.

So this guy has one already posted, the only thing i did was use cut to remove the section i wanted then moved it up enough blocks to add the deck and then pasted it back. So i had a ship with a blank deck and then i filled that in with my blocks. So if you really need to see that in addition to this video let me know :)
