With Alpha 11 we activated not only the HV>SV docking but also the “any-to-any” docking for all vessels.

    What means, docking between
    • HV<>HV
    • SV<>SV
    • CV<>CV
    • HV<>SV
    • SV<>CV
    • HV<>CV
is now possible and should give you even more creative options to work with!

Note that all docking follows the same rules as always:
    • no docking of vessels that have already vessels docked
    • turrets, shields and weapons do not work when docked
    • passengers can not stay seated in a docked vessel
How is the carrier and the docking ship defined?

The docking ship is ALWAYS the ship that docks to another ship. The other ship will automatically become the "carrier".

F.ex. docking a CV on top of a HV, makes the HV the carrier. Question only is, if the HV can tow that load. :D

Special Info about HVs use in SPACE

To work around this limitation when you are in space, the HV can now move in ALL directions, but only with a limited speed of 3m/s but also WITHOUT requiring any thrusters!

This means, as of A11, you can load and unload a HV in space without any restrictions, even when the HV is floating in space in non-gravity environment.

    Further Notes/Knowledge:
    • With Alpha 11 the weight and mass of a docked vessel will also contribute to the carrier mass!
    • Shields on the carrier do NOT protect the docked vessel ( The Hull Polarization is only active for the vessel with the shield device)
    • A vessel will always only dock, when there is a pilot seated inside! ( If you drop a BP onto a BA or CV, this will NOT dock automatically!)

Note that you can also dock CV>SV and CV>HV if desired.

Also, you can dock a ship without thrusters if you position a second ship so that it's within range of the first ship's landing gear (i.e. the landing gear extend), and then get into a cockpit on the first ship. After a second or so, the first ship should indicate that it has docked, and you can then move both ships via the second ship.

As there is a short delay before docking occurs, you can also park a ship on a BA without docking by quickly setting the ship down on the BA and getting out of the cockpit. In the event that the ship has docked, you can turn off the thrusters and press [SPACE] (assuming you're docked with downward-facing landing gear), and that should detach the ship from the BA.

Nope, you cannot dock a CV onto a SV or HV, but the other way round (if you wanted to point out that I did not give ALL docking options above..got added ;)

Correct, but that has always been possible. A ship only docks IF A PILOT is sitting inside.

Probably not the method you should encourage, hummel.
Easiest and most hassle-free way of docking an HV to an SV is to drive up on top of the SV and park on top like you would a CV. Added bonus is that most HVs already have a docking pad on their underside for docking to BA and CV so no new docking pads are needed and no fancy flying and getting in and out of the SV or HV.

Well, I just tested it and have a CV docked to an SV, so . . . if you meant to disallow it, that restriction is not working.

Yes, but I thought it was worth mentioning again given that it makes designing modules for ships easier (no need for fuel, generators, or thrusters). Technically, the docking vessel doesn't even need a core (though you won't be able to undock it without a core).

I think docking CVs to HVs and SVs is fine. Maybe not for the poor HV that has to lift the CV but... :D

For example, it lets you tow a CV with an SV for salvage.

Note that shields retain whatever charge they had when the ship docked. So be sure to let your shields recharge before docking to something.

Ok, I missed first info that now you can dock everything with everything and 'same to same' - as someone who likes to move around & explore with SV, this is extra happy news :)

Now, playing with new CPU thing, I can have combat scout SV with "worpable" docking station part (and to save points on both of them) - something like that very cool Star Wars prequel small ship concept (hyperdrive modules + interceptors) that I really like.

Interesting - this is/was not intentional afaik... :D

  11. Lol, I wasn't sure if it was intentional or not.
I did have fun with it for a few minutes in space though. It's not really practical I would say, but I have nothing against it at all.
In this screenshot you can see a house sized (and shape) CV parked on top of a tiny SV. The CV is one layer of hardened steel thick.

The SV already had 4 small jet thrusters for forward movement and I tacked the largest SV thruster on the bottom, for science of course. I'm piloting the SV in the screenshot, lol.

This is my stealth setup. You'll never see me coming. Haha!

    Edit
In case anyone is curious, that's a 23.1t SV hauling a 1.49kt CV.
SV comes in at T3 at 22,371 CPU ;)

@krazzykid2006 - so essentially now we have SV that is a space tugboat for precise docking of CVs to a space BAs

Eleon, just want to say, "Thank You for this!!" :)

Really looking forward to seeing all the fun & imaginative uses these options will allow.
    ---

    Couple thoughts I'd like to offer for future consideration, long term 'wish list' stuff;

    1) Crashed ships on planets being ships instead of bases.
Understand that with SI differences between types might be impossible/weird for CVs, but Ravien uses real wrecked SVs on planets in his Eden scenario, which is very cool.

    2) Highly unlikely but, :) something that would allow a ship to dock to the top of a base, then cut away base supports to ground and or Core, leaving detached portion of base connected to ship. Ship carrys 'base' away either for salvage or to a new foundation. Re-attaching to new foundation might require someting like the Merge Blocks that Space Engineers uses for this kind of thing.

Thinking of things like repositioning a space base. Or picking up and moving a planetary base modular. Mostly for RP or fun.

Such ships couldn't be buried, but otherwise it ought to work.

I'd upgrade that to almost certainly impossible, unfortunately.

Is it just me or are we not allowed dock to the abandon ships in space ? I can add thrusters/fuel thank and generator to them and fly them but they will not dock to my CV. I don't see a core on any of them although I can't put a new core down. It would be nice to dock them my CV and take them back to the planet.

They might have an admin core? If you open the control panel, what does the device list indicate?

Maybe this feature is destiny to be in the game? haha
I wasn't able to open the control panel but I can try again. There is a core somewhere because I can't place a new core and they will fly if I add a fuel tank and generator to them.

Think I recall @Scoob having a similar issue, and someone thought it was due to older blueprints; something about old changes resulting in oddness with some of the graveyard ships...?

Hopefully it will be viewed as divine intervention and remain in-game :)

With an admin core, you probably can't open the control panel, come to think of it.
