I know there is a known issue for staircases not being climbable when angled. The curved staircase seems to just not work or work very well regardless. I've tested these on planetary bases, in CV's and on space stations, and they just don't seem to work - you either do not ascend them at all, or get stuck trying to ascend them. Getting down them works just fine but going up, not so good. Don't know if this is related to the Known Issue, or if this is its own issue.
I will counter that they can be just as terrible in real life. Ever try to get a Grand Piano up a spiral staircase? I do not recommend it.
