would really like to know what items get placed in which cargo containers on a base or ship, and how we can change what gets placed as loot on the base.

I'm semi confident that when you place a crate of a given flavour, it does the loot automatically.

I imagine one day, we'll be able to put our own loot in cargo boxes..
But i don't think we can right now.

Considering that in a Survival game you get different loot with each re-load of the game, I suppose the trigger is the start of a gaming session.
As for content, each flavour of alien container will have a list that items are randomly being chosen from.

    I got you.

Okay loot generation on a poi is based off loot tables. Each type of container has a number of items it can generate.

White being common loot tier 1 weapons and ingots and basic craft materials.

Yellow being more complex crafting materials and t2 weapons.

Red being completed base and ship parts, IE generators, hover engines, constructors,

Purple being epic weapons. You cannot craft epic weapons.

secondary If you take your multi tool you can break down pois and rebuild the stuff.
    IE
My early game stratagy is taking the station over akua, it has 2 advanced constructors. I can then break them down with a multi tool and rebuild one of them on my Akua base.

There is a 5th container that I cannot pull up in creative. It looks like a cargo container but it generates loot. You will recognize it for having only a few slots. It has building blocks mostly.

from my own tinkering so far, only the alien containers have auto loot generation of specific tier. I'm guessing the cargo boxes marked (POI) will be phased out in future updates, including the structures the devs have put them in.

what I hope we get later on is a configuration file that lets us create loot tables we can tag to any container through the playfield file or other means.
